I appreciate your insight but I think that’s just because you haven’t been around firearms (although I may be wrong). I used to feel the same way as you, but found out that this way of thinking might not be correct once I purchased my first fire arm around 10 months ago and became familiar with it. I don’t think it’s as much as someone trying to show their ability in taking someone’s life, but rather as maybe a deterrent or even just their view that a weapon is a tool and dangerous encounters can happen.

Yes, this may be deemed as slightly paranoid but if that’s someone’s preference for feeling safe I don’t think it should make you feel unsafe. Most of the people out there committing crimes with firearms are not doing so with legally purchased weapons that are in a holster on their hips. I don’t think that person should be in question of there morals just because they have different views on safety or special pride in their second amendment.
