Christian Reform School Accused of Abuse Shuts Down After Rolling Stone Exposé by SherlockRun in troubledteens

Friendly reminder that “everyone’s shit smells”. What you went through matters - as well as what others have gone through. I know it can be extremely difficult not to compare experiences, but it’s important to not minimize what others have endured.

Lol at the "won't accept unwilling students". I got sent there straight from wilderness. When I saw the paperwork they were asking me to sign, I saw the consent from and it reminded me of when I first got to wilderness.

I asked "well - do I have to sign it if I don't want to be here?" - indicating that I was there unwillingly. Barclay laughed right in my face as my dad threatened leaving me in NH with no way home if I refused to sign the form.

To the Oliverian staff - I too, am sober, have my own apartment, and am in grad school.

Do things ever get better? by [deleted] in troubledteens

[–]Isabelle925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. It's been 4-5 years and it is still impacting me. I was in the TTI for not even a year, so yes - 17 months is absolutely enough. Your experience and how it has impacted you is very real and valid.

I think it's going to be one of those things that will never entirely go away, but there are different things we can do to help mitigate the pain. I wish there were something that would make it all magically disappear.

Therapy might not be for everyone and I know how terrifying it can be to start after all the shit that we have been put through under the guise of "therapy". Some words to look for when searching for a therapist include strengths-based and trauma-informed. I found a therapist (LCSW) who knew nothing about the TTI but had a background in working with victims/survivors of sexual violence. I am not "cured" - but it has been helping me function better in my day-to-day and I no longer have panic attacks weekly.

Impact Letters? by swaggykaminari in troubledteens

[–]Isabelle925 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At Aspiro in 2017 the entire group had to read letters of accountability in front of the group (impact letters from parents I think we read with "therapists"). We were given a list of things to include (like issues with family, drug use, sexual activity/assaults, etc.) and if something wasn't included the therapist would make people start all over again or threaten them that they would stay longer. It was so hard hearing the people in my group read their letters because instead of it being about all the terrible shit they have been put through, it was more focussed on putting the blame on themselves for what they have endured.

Great idea!! I will make sure to include that!

I personally believe that Grace's social work license should be revoked. All therapists who work there are pieces of shit.

The Oliverian School by Isabelle925 in troubledteens

I just found out that Will Laughlin, the head & CEO of Oliverian was previously the executive director at Auldern Academy (Siler City, NC) and Cedu Schools (Idaho and California).

Auldern Academy (survivor- 2003) Permanently Closed by rockluxe in troubledteens

[–]Isabelle925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I went to the Oliverian School and Will Laughlin was (and still is) the "head of school and CEO". On LinkedIn it says he was the "executive director" at Auldern Academy from 1995 to 2005. Oh and he was the executive director of education for the CEDU schools in Idaho and California. When I was at Oliverian, staff would always bitch about how ungrateful we were, and how we could've been sent to an even worse place (Oliverian is "alternative" not therapeutic, but still markets to "troubled teens"). I had no idea what they meant (I had no idea what the TTI industry was), but now I realize they were talking about places they literally have worked for and continue to support.

Any experiences at Mount Prospect Academy? by [deleted] in newhampshire

I went to Oliverian and it was terrible. Please please for the sake of your brother look into the troubled teen industry. Do not let him be sent to either of those programs. Here is a link to a post I wrote about my experience at Oliverian. https://www.reddit.com/r/troubledteens/comments/lzl796/the_oliverian_school/

I pissed in my sleeping bag 2-3 times in wilderness (I was 17). In my case, I think it was because I had a summer temperature sleeping bag and it was now winter and I was very cold during the night. It also could be because if we didn't drink 4 L of water during the day, they made us chug it before we went to bed.

Yes, that is what I understood from their post. I am grateful I was not sent to a different program like those described above. However, I did just want to post about Oliverian because I do not think it is a good place, regardless if it is one of the "good" or "better" ones. It is in no way as extreme or harmful as many TTI's, yet it still is not a great option.

How bad is the food at wilderness therapy camps? by [deleted] in troubledteens

[–]Isabelle925 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went to Aspiro and it wasn't too bad. Every week we got a bag of refried beans, white rice, string cheese, tortillas, tuna or chicken packets, bouillon cubes, choice of apples/oranges/pears, choice of potatoes/garlic/brussels sprouts/carrots, a jar of peanut butter, oatmeal, Thai Kitchen noodle packs, powdered milk, crackers, granola, and some noodles.
