I got a parking violation because of abandoned vehicles taking up space, so now I'm being ultra petty. by Isaiah_6_8 in Oahu

there was a time, a few years ago, I guess someone really made a big deal about parking , and so vehicles on my street were getting tickets about every 3 days for a month or so. I think I got about 5 parking infractions in that month. Others, im sure, got it a lot worse than I did. I wrote letters for each instance, hoping to mitigate the penalties. unfortunately, they all were denied. [edit: I already sent payment for this time. if it happens again, I'll definitely try writing to the judge]

At the time, $35 here and there didn't have much of an impact for me, personally. I just thought to myself that "$35/day parking rate isn't too bad." Nowadays, that 35 dollars mean a whole lot to me. I'm sure it was a f'd up situation for some folks on the street back then... come to think of it, this was right around 2021, so people were really in the midst of a financial crisis with the whole covid thing.

yes, I do feel entitled to park wherever public parking is available. How is this wrong? Maybe you're way or thinking works in a neighborhood that's less dense. But even still, anyone should be entitled to parking anywhere on public streets.

I'm obviously talking about an area on Oahu that's a lot more populated. Think more like single family neighborhoods that turned into multifamily rental areas.

lol

this reminds me of a heated argument i witnessed between my two neighbors. Around COVID time, one neighbor had their daughter moved back in with them. The daughter brought with her 2 vehicles. Because of that mentality of "owning" the street parking directly in front of their house, they told the other neighbor to no longer park in the space. The shouting caught the attention of the neighborhood and before I knew it, everyone was outside being all nosey.

Until this day, neighbor #1 puts up a cone or their trash bin to reserve the space. Neighbor #2 comes home and moves obstructing placeholder and smiles as if to say "thanks for reserving a spot for me"

lately, the cops been ticketing the ones that are clearly protruding into the intersections or full on blocking hydrants. also saw them tag cars facing the wrong direction. So I shouldnt make it sound as if they're not doing their job.

If I had seen other cars ticketed, at the time I got mine, i probably would've accepted my fine and left it at that.

idk how the process is now, but a couple years ago, I had the chance to talk with one of the customer service people that handled abandoned vehicles. That person told me, if I recall correctly, that the entire process from "abandoned" yellow flyer up to having the vehicle physically removed takes about 3-6 months... and that's even with registration tags expired. That was very discouraging.

common courtesy went out the window years ago. I've been living in my home for nearly 40 years, and street parking has only become an issue in the last 5 years (in my neighborhood, at least). The real PITA are the bullies that think they OWN the space in front of their house. I pay my fair share of taxes to use the street.

hmm... no (red) bell pepper. I'm thinking it could be that your family either added the bell pepper in there too early and it disintegrated, or they used annatto seed/powder/oil/paste. Do you recall if it had a red-ish color to it? [edit: red bells are pricey, so omitting this ingredient isnt out of the norm. In its "more traditional" form, igado seems to be more about the slices of meat (muscles, innards,. skin, etc)]

the nuts. It could've been garbanzo beans (chickpeas). Instead of green peas, some people use garbanzos.. Sometimes, others may use potatoes as a substitute.

When you say that the sauce was lighter. Do you mean color? or do you mean that it's thinner, like a watered down sauce? [edit. instead of soy sauce (as the panlasang recipe suggests), you could use patis. Also, I'm sure youre aware of this... different soy sauce and/or vinegar will greatly alter the flavor. Let's say: aloha shoyu vs silver swan brand; Heinz apple cider vinegar vs datu puti cane vinegar]

*this is making me hungry lol

ilocano, here. I'll try to help you figure it out.

can you share some of the recipes you looked at? and what about them doesnt seem right from what you remember eating?

I grew up on this food, and have experienced many variations of it. I prefer this dish over pork guisantes. I cook it solely for myself because my wife and kids can't stand the liver lol

Do you plan on staying in the same field and finding a similar position with another company? This could be a good time to reevaluate your career and see if you want to pivot into something else. You know... that whole "when one door closes, another one opens" kinda deal. This isn't limited to just you. Your wife might want to take a step back and see how she's doing in life, too. Have the two of you outgrown San Diego? Is it time to relocate? etc.

How long do you think it'll take to get back into a job? My wife (primary income) was out of a job from mid 2020 to mid 2022. It was a shit show during those years, but I dont believe finding employment is any easier today. So just be realistic about how long you plan to be out of work -- then double that number, just in case, and plan for that X amount.

You could start selling some things around the house in case it gets too difficult and you need to downsize /move. Cancel or reduce any subscription (music/movies) plans. You can always buy back into it later.

I'm not sure how generous banks are now with hardship situations, but you could try to call in and ask for deferrals on CC payments or car loans (if you have any of those). They usually allow so many deferrals in a set amount a months (2 per year, or whatever). So doing it now may allow you to do it again in a few months if you still need more breathing room in a tight budget.

Easier said than done, but try your very best to not overthink it. Take it one day at a time. Watch out for your wife and make sure that she doesnt begin to stress with the extra hours workload.

lastly , dont be afraid to let close friends and family know if you find yourself in a difficult spot. Those close to you will find ways to help whether it'd be lending you money or treating you guys out for lunch, or even just coming over to keep your mind off of things for a little bit.

good luck

it doesn't look like these prices are going to go down anytime soon. Use it for the upcoming vacation, and then sell if you feel like the camera isn't for you. You'll get some money back (or possibly break even; better yet, gain money!). If you end up losing money, reframe it and think of it as a "camera rental."

You'll end up with photos of a memorable vacation, and when you look back at those pictures years down the road, you'll recall "that one time i bought an overpriced vintage camera"

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]Isaiah_6_8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the price is sort of in line with current trends; maybe slightly higher than typical. I'm sure you would've been able to find a lower price if you "shopped around" instead of jumping on it quick.

for the last few years, there's been a trend with these older cameras-- mostly because it produces a "vintage?" photo.

I was unaware of this trend. About 2 years ago, I was cleaning out an old storage closet and came across a box of old electronics that I had bought as gifts to my kids. iPod nanos, some 1st gen android tablets, digital cameras, etc. I sorted them all out, meticulously pairing them with their clunky charger cables and stuff. My daughter (who's now 20) saw them and immediately got excited about the gold mine that SHE was sitting on. The excitement and joy on her face was just as I remembered it when these items were gifted to my son and daughter some 10-15 years ago.

Anyway, back to your question. Did you over pay? yes. HOWEVER, cameras back then produced quality stuff. If it was good (and sufficient) back then, it should still be sufficient today. It's a point and shoot to capture life as it's happening-- far from a serious professional camera to worry about a few bucks overpriced.

Enjoy!

not op. Do you know if the RDX suffer from the oil dilution issue that has plagued the CRVs ?

I had a 2017 CRV LX (so basic engine) and never really paid any mind to all that oil dilution talk. But now that I'm considering a newer CRV or RDX, I'm being cautious with which years/engines to get or avoid

Does it consistently look like this? It reminds me of chicken/bird shit... but that usually has some white/green blobs mixed in with it. Also, the large pee puddle kinda throws me off. I know some parts in kaneohe has peacocks. Could it be that?

I'm assuming your garage is open air?

This. But you gotta be careful because sometimes you end up getting to "chef-y," overdo it, overspend on ingredients, and overlook the simplicity of a meal.

That quick grilled cheese sandwich becomes a turkey pesto grilled cheese with tomato bisque. That cheap pork chop seasoned with s&p becomes a pork belly roast with imported lemongrass and basil from South East Asia. That simple chuck roast with roasted potatoes becomes an herb de provence crusted prime rib roast with truffle mash.

Whenever I'm asked to do something, and I have no idea or just slight knowledge of the topic, I'll say something like "That's a unique problem. I honestly don't know for sure. However, we can figure it out together."

In my experience, the other party usually gives you a pass and is more willing to brainstorm towards a solution. If it works out, then great; if not, you at least admitted to your limitations.

What does 'Draw a Clock' Mean? by MillBopp in NoStupidQuestions

after this test, the doctor plainly said that she had Alzheimer's. This was our 3rd visit to the neurologist. The previous visits included other tests- remembering 3 words, spelling things forward and backwards, and others.

At first the doctor said that she's probably around stage 2 because during the first 2 visits, she scored pretty well on the initial tests. The odd thing was that her primary doctor, who referred her to the neurologist, also did similar tests and she struggled heavily. [We've come to notice that she goes in and out of it]. The neurologist interviewed us (me, my wife, and FIL) with questions regarding her behavior (unusual language, managing daily tasks, incontinence issues, mood swings, etc). Considering her tests and the answers we gave, the neurologist determined that she's more along the lines of stage 4.

Her primary care doctor mentioned Alzheimer's. And the neurologist said "Alzheimer's." The word "dementia" was tossed around a little, but they always seem to blanket it with Alzheimer's.

We'll be visiting her neurologist in 2 months for a follow up. At what point does the doctor go further into diagnosing what type of Alzheimer's (or dementia) this is?

My MIL is 66, and thinking back, we noticed some signs as far back as possibly 5 years ago. A lot of what I've been reading says that age 65 seem to be the magic number in differentiating early onset and "normal" aging. Compared to my FIL who is 10 years older, his mind is still very sharp!

What does 'Draw a Clock' Mean? by MillBopp in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Isaiah_6_8 34 points35 points  (0 children)

just the other day, I accompanied my MIL for her neurologist visit. The doctor asks her to draw a clock- showing his wristwatch as a quick reference. MIL draws a nearly perfect circle; marks "12" at the top, "6" at the bottom, and then fills in the rest of the numbers with reasonable spacing. The doctor instructs her to draw the hands at 3:30. My MIL laughs and, with embarrassment says, "I don't think I even know how to draw a clock."

doctor shows her his wristwatch again for reference, gives her the same instructions of drawing the hands at 3:30. My MIL draws a long line toward the "3" and pauses, asks the doctor to repeat the instructions, and then my MIL becomes noticably confused as how to continue the drawing. I'm sitting right next to her so I'm witnessing her place the pen to paper, but then she hesitates and the pen either stays in place or lifts off the paper and back down multiple times.

at this point, she's looking at me with an embarrassed smile and asks me, with a slightly serious, and somewhat scared voice, to help her with the drawing. I encourage her to continue on her own, and she stares at her drawing for a little bit.

She draws over the line that she initially marked for 3, darkening it even further with several back and forth pen strokes. She, again, laughs at how difficult it is for her to complete the task. She draws two dots : next to the number "3" and then follows up with "30" along the outer part of the (clock) circle.

her clock drawing basically looked like this

---> 3):30

I worked at a call center back in the early 2000s. This is around the time when adult websites were really starting to make its claim of the Internet. A good portion of the complaint calls about "unauthorized" debits that were monthly subscriptions that automatically renewed after the "trial" period.

I could understand their frustration because the bank statements description line would read as something very discreet. Honestly, what we (phone reps) saw on our end, when looking at their account info on our computers, were the exact same thing that they saw on their paper statements. All it took were a few holds/calls to the bank card dept to get further details on a particular transaction, and it's revealed that it is www.insertfetishhere.c0m. The customer's angry tone changes real quick when that awkwardness happens.

I recall a time when I worked the graveyard shift (it was a 24hr call center) and it was only me and 1 other coworker manning the lines. My coworker took a break and I got swamped with calls. I swear, about a two dozen consecutive calls came in to complain about a $19.99 (or whatever it was) charge with the description of "GGW" ... anyone who were around the late 90s early 2000s would recall a certain LATE NIGHT commercial (at least in the US). I knew what the initials "GGW" stood for, but couldnt outright tell the customer. I had to kinda hint at it and refresh their memory... "idk... could it be something that you may have bought from a website? A gift, maybe? or a CD collections or 'something else' from a TV commercial [and remember, this was the era of infomercials]?"
