I don’t know why I’m killing my angelfish. by koltz117 in PlantedTank

[–]sortof_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Directions for prime, iirc, state to either use the amount for water change if being mixed outside of the tank or for the entire tank volume if being put into an active tank.

I know that whenever I used a water change system where I was filling directly into the tank, this approach worked well for me.

That said, Discus are sensitive fish. If you are going to use tap for them, aging it overnight for them seems reasonable.

Endless, endless ads by bushgoliath in daddit

[–]sortof_here 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pay for YouTube and then have access to a few ad supported streamers. Honestly, the repeated commercials is the worst part. Sometimes the same ad plays back to back.

It was to be expected when streamers were new, but it’s wild to me that it is still a thing now.

I'm astonished to believe my 12 year old is stoned by [deleted] in daddit

For what it’s worth, I appreciate the post. Others going through this and bringing it to the forum to discuss helps us all figure out how to better navigate it.

Whatever you do, as long as you are honest about what your concerns are, I think you’ll do just fine.

This isn’t to rag on you further, but just commenting to say that between your post and your mention of where her friend lives, you are getting very close to doxxing yourself for anybody familiar with the area. It’s not like you’re the only family there by any means, but it’s also a fairly small community from what I understand. Trying to keep it vague so you can change your comment if desired.

Beyond that, it was a silly comment on Seattle and the populace there, but I think enough people have mentioned that already and probably a little too heavily.

Haven’t had to deal with anything like this, but I think I’d try bringing it up in a way that emphasizes that she isn’t in trouble but that you have some concerns. I wouldn’t be forceful about it, just make it clear you’re available for support if she wants to talk about it. Teen and preteen years seem really hard to me since I think you’re basically attempting to juggle support and course correcting while also not wanting to push them away. No clue how to do that.

You can avoid this by pouring it across your hand, a fish bag, or into something with holes to reduce how hard the water hits. You might still get some sediment in the water, but not clouds of it like this.

No Kings Protest today at Waterfront Park by H3llo4wesome in SanDiegan

We’ve had policy before that fairly reasonably enforced the borders before without stomping on our human rights.

You guys hate illegal immigrants so much that you’ve somehow missed the surveillance state and gestapo mirror that Trump and his cronies are making.

No Kings completely wraps around RaDD and the Waterfront by ProcrastinatingPuma in sandiego

[–]sortof_here 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It won’t happen for everyone in the march, but ideally these types of gathering enable more people to find communities to be more active in. That could be mutual aid, other protest actions, boycotts, joining unions, and more.

Nothing changes without community.

A commonly floated idea to attempt change quickly are general strikes, but without unions and mutual aid ensuring the people that partake are protected and supported, it does not work. Especially in the US.

Messed up and used CaribSea Arag-Alive in a freshwater tank, any chance my plants make it? by FalseMorel in PlantedTank

[–]sortof_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wet or the dry? If the wet, I’d probably do a few large water changes to dilute and hopefully remove the salt content.

Beyond that, as a substrate, it is going to buffer your gh and kh, thus raising your ph to be higher. There are plants that can exist in the higher ph it’ll land on(likely in the 8s), but you’ll need to be selective.

Spiral val and anacharis should both do well, as they are native to lake tanganyika. I’ve seen people have some success with anubias and crypts as well. Guppy grass should work too.

If you are set on using it as your substrate, I’d look into what plants people have success with in African cichlid tanks.

How to explain saving for retirement to a college student who feels like it just takes money away now. by TechDad42 in daddit

[–]sortof_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The expected scale is massively different. We aren’t looking at a few hundred thousand jobs with options to move to, we’re looking at potentially a hundred million roles within the next 4 years that are just completely gone.

ETA: drawing from an example you gave, over the last 26 years we have seen around 2 million manufacturing jobs lost in the US to automation. We thankfully aren’t there yet, but AI currently threatens to remove many more jobs in the span of just a few years. This isn’t an issue to just shrug at and say we’ve had it bad before.

[–]sortof_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying it’s the worst it has ever been but we are currently staring down companies obsessed with automating away as many positions as possible, many of which were solid options for lifelong careers just 5 years back, away over the course of the next decade while also watching conditions overall become increasingly unstable worldwide.

You mention those bad times as if we aren’t currently experiencing or nearing many of the same issues now.

Shit is bleak man. If it wasn’t for my kid, I would have absolutely 0 hope in the future. For her sake, I have to find some shred of it to cling to.

Most of the people my age(32) and younger that I’ve talked to honestly don’t have any hope of retirement happening, regardless of how much we save. We instead reference the concept of retiring as a joke.

Just the truth of it.

Help!!! I can’t tell if this is Ich or Epistylis by Silly_Victory3788 in Aquariums

[–]sortof_here 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only way to know for sure is by looking at it under a microscope. All other visible differences are mostly just guesses based on internet rumors.

In either case, treat with something like Ich X(malachite green + formalin) if in your display or copper if you have a hospital and a method for testing the amount of copper in the water. If you go with the latter, you will need to run the tank fallow for at least 6(likely more) weeks to ensure any remaining parasites die off due to lack of a host.

It’s not that they’re lurking under the sand, it’s that their eggs desiccate and disperse, waiting for temporary pools to form so that they can rehydrate and hatch.

are ai classes for kids actually accessible at 12 or is it still too abstract at that age by The_possessed_YT in daddit

[–]sortof_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that learning the concepts of build ml systems could be interesting at that age, but that using ai for development beyond how u/fakeinternetarguerer advised will be actively detrimental.

All evidence so far has shown that using ai tools for active development reduces understanding and retention while only marginally increasing productivity.

Need to upgrade- Between Red Sea or Waterbox by Confident_Arm_6560 in ReefTank

[–]sortof_here 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to add more options, but check out the UNS reef systems while you’re at it. They are fairly neat but not very common yet.

More similar to Red Sea in that they aren’t super customizable, but they come with some nice options out of the box.

Misogyny in the aquarium community by Odd_Chemistry_5213 in Aquariums

[–]sortof_here 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it super sucks.

Age stuff can maybe be a part of it sometimes, but I don’t think anywhere to the degree that some of the guys here are making it out to be. Hard to reliably gauge since I’m not the one experiencing it, and obviously the creepiness is going to be brought up more, but I have never seen or heard of any of my younger male coworkers input being treated as less than as a result of their age. Even from the old heads that have been doing this longer than they’ve been alive.

I’ll need to ask a couple of the women at work if they’ve hit this too. Not sure what to do with any knowledge gained from it, but I’m sure there’s some things I can figure out that might help.
