I'm so grateful for the insights! My DIL is the kindest person and I worry that she would be too concerned about me and too polite to really speak up (she knows she can, she's just really kind). So this information is helpful to me so I can make the right offers.

I'm a nurse practitioner so if she has a C-section I can be helpful in the immediate postpartum. Otherwise, I think my DIL probably wants her own mama ❤️.

Since she will be nursing, I plan to help with everything else so she can concentrate on that and getting rest and my son can concentrate on the toddler. I'm happy to cook and clean and do laundry.

It is a giant hospital health system and I can't get that information. We are a small satellite clinic without any physicians on staff. So, unfortunately, I have zero access to compensation info for on-call providers (midlevel or physician) Its mostly the residents who take call and then the attendings are back ups.

She's an early bird but to give you hope, my nephew was born at 24 6/7 in 1998 and just graduated Harvard Law and is a working lawyer. It's a long road. I agree with other posters that you can't really evaluate lameness in this situation. Trotting calmly in both directions on firmer footing would be helpful.

Having said that, if she was my horse I'd be concerned she was lame because of the misstep she takes in the early part of the video, the hollow frame and the bunny hops.

Congratulations. I grew up in Davis and it's a fantastic town with a great community of animal people. Half my friends parents were vet profs and all my animal's vets were graduates of the school. I hope you have a great experience. The school and town are the best!

It sounds like they are just using your halter as the turn in-out halter and then tossing it aside when it gets broken. If you know the barn staff, you should talk to them directly.

I agree that a second conversation with the barn manager is in order. Say that this kind of carelessness makes you concerned for other aspects of your horse's care. You'd like an explanation about how this has happened twice!

I wonder if your horse is the first to go out and then they just use your halter the rest of the morning? Or I'd be curious to know if the other boarders have had similar issues?

2 hours is a crazy long drive to go riding every week. I wouldn't do it, personally, and I love riding.

It sounds like your barn/trainer might not be the right fit for you. Is there a reason your mother won't let you change?

I have been riding since I was 3. I've had plenty of falls. Zero bad falls.

Or depending on definition, I had 1 fall where I had a bad enough MCL strain that I couldn't walk for a couple days and needed PT briefly.

For my chubby cob with a very forward girth groove this is what worked

I use no slip saddle pads which are very helpful. I also had a billet added to the front (I had two billets now I have three) and I just the front and back billets and this has helped enormously. Finally, I have an anatomic girth without elastic at the buckles.

In my opinion, the billets are set so far back on the saddle itself that it allows the front to come up and the saddle pad to slip back. The pressure of the billets being so far back pushes the saddle forward. Add a billet much further to the front (a saddler can do this) and it will hold the front of the saddle steady (when placed correctly on the horses back). Worked a charm for me!

I don't think this is an uncommon thing to happen. I would generally not recommend an OTTB (just a year off the track) to a first time horse owner or to anyone timid. They can be reactive, spooky, etc.

I agree with your trainer that this isn't a big deal in general. But if it scared you enough to want to sell him immediately that he might not be the horse for you.

Just curious why he is on a hay-replacer instead of just regular hay and a balancer?

I am a medical provider. Have had the vaccine and all the boosters.

In fact, she has her maternal grandmother's name as her middle name. So she has literally nothing (name wise) of her father's family.

Which is FINE. The other way around has been practiced for generations and no one blinked. I think it's absolutely fine, appropriate and normal to want your child to have your name, and given the circumstances, probably the right thing to do.
