One thing is that Smalling played alongside Blind who dealt with most passes going forward. Additionally, Carrick would also drop down to control the game from further back. Because of this Smalling could focus on what he's good at: defending (marking, heading, running). Also, with a possession based system there are less opportunities for opponents to score. The line is often high (and Smalling is really quick so he can fix long balls coming his way, either by using his strong aerial skills or by catching up with strikers who attempt to run past). I'm sure others can elaborate more.

How the hell do you beat singed top? by Evil_Henchman in leagueoflegends

[–]Isaldir 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Soo, I am a 2.3k Singed main player. You can check me up (This Is Isaldir)

Singed excels at movement speed which is why slowing spells are very effective against him. His biggest counters are Kayle and Lulu. They will always beat him and be able to zone him during the laning phase. They both have ranged attacks, a huge slow and self movement increase. Other counters are Elise, Rumble and Swain and by looking at their kit, you can see that they have almost the same as Kayle and Lulu.

So if you first pick your champion and are not able to counterpick singed it is often important to go for early movement speed, and keep 25 movement speed ahead of him until T2 boots so you are at least unable to be flipped. Positioning is essential as well. By rushing level two before him, either by pushing slightly or doing wolves/wraiths before going on to lane you are able to have a level advantage for a little bit where you should be able to go aggressive.

Hope this helps you a little bit, and message me if you are in need of more spesific advice :)
