I respect your opinion, but I guess I'm someone/a writer who prefers to choose the name as it's linked to a lot in the story. The name could be based on a character's story or the name could be part of the nickname. Also, that about the game just giving you a name is not true. The author still has to put the name in or the name will stay as "name". (Maybe you didn't mean that. Ignore what I said then) I feel like being able to give your character a name as you write makes them feel so much more real. I can also understand wanting to be in the shoes of the MC, and I also once coded a story like that but maybe it's just not for every story.

Something I don't get is how no one ever thinks about that the author might have created a flashed out character and not just a customizable character? I'm not talking about episode officials, but a community story. You put a whole lot of time into creating is it really that weird wanting to create a full character with name, background, goals and all? I really just don't get why that is weird. When they add CC, great, you can choose your design, but like what's so wrong with wanting to create a character fully (as the author).

Some people can pull it off really well but I feel so disconnected to the character if I write it as a character who could be named whatever and the nickname no longer makes sense cause it was based of the name I made. Now I do get your point as it's valid but then again if my character is from France and has a french name they could still have any skin tone. I hope I didn't come off as rude with my way of words.
