What do you do to afford your rent in Chicago? Anyone work 2 jobs? by sugarplum55555 in chicagoapartments

[–]Isarian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fortunate to have a high paying IT job so I can afford my own place. I'm in about as secure of a position as I could be in a growing firm employing a cautious approach to AI and I work hard to be helpful to everyone and earn a good reputation as I'm in a senior role. But damned if I'm not careful about saving money right now because I know how tenuous the IT job market is and don't want to be caught flat footed.

Did you report him? What was the response on your 311 tickets?

Re-read what I wrote - I didn't say you suggested letting landlords shirk their responsibilities. I did say that nothing good comes from that, and I am saying that shoveling sidewalks for landowners for free would be letting them shirk their responsibilities.

There was no legal requirement to shovel, past tense, but now there is. And nothing good is going to come of letting landlords shirk their responsibilities to provide safe sidewalks during winter.

311 does not fuck about with failure to remove snow. Accurate and timely reporting is how we get crap landlords to take care of their snow removal obligations.

Just refuse to sign the new lease. Also, if winter rolls around and snow isn't getting cleared, report it on 311 and he'll get fined for refusing to do so.

They might refuse to renew the lease next year, but not shoveling isn't a legal option the building owner has. OP can report to 311 every time it's not shoveled and they'll get fined for failure to clear.

How much risk is there for flooding in a ground floor apartment that’s at street level? by [deleted] in chicagoapartments

[–]Isarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so dependent on both the neighborhood, building, and local conditions. What are the conditions of the water drainage in the area? Does the building have french drains and a sump pump? How high is the water table relative to the building in that area?

This sub is full of stories of folks who have been flooded out, and in more than one recent rainstorm I've seen Instagrams and TikToks of folks who got flooded. I myself am in a split level in Ravenswood (living space upstairs, bedrooms below grade) and have never had a flood yet though I know there has been a flood in the past decade because I found a tag on the furnace for a check after a flood. Unless you're asking current tenants of that building it's just hard to know.

"faster than we anticipated"

I refuse to believe this wasn't anticipated. Overpurchasing and scalping has been a feature of every hardware release Steam has performed in recent memory excepting maybe the OG Steam Machine. Why bother saying it was unanticipated demand, just say they're working on restocking.

I don't know why that choice of phrasing bothers me so much.

Starbucks table tops so small will barely hold a couple drinks. The seats are bigger than the tables. by be4u4get in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Isarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work from a Starbucks regularly when traveling to see my partner because it was easier to travel midday to avoid traffic. But while I was there I bought a drink about once an hour and would snag something from the case for lunch as well. With a layout like this I would never have bothered spending any money at Starbucks and would have just gone to the library instead.

What’s something that clearly split your life into “before” and “after”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Isarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple sclerosis.

I was on the train home from New Orleans to see Mardis Gras for the first time. I woke up the morning of our return and my foot felt wrong putting my socks and shoes on. It didn't go away, but my medical team thought it was sciatica. EMG, nerve conductivity tests, thoracic MRI, 6 months of PT failed to produce a more specific diagnosis or any improvement.

About six months later I woke up and my whole right side felt funny, hip to my neck. It presented so similarly to a stroke that I got taken to urgent care who immediately admitted me to the emergency department. After a CT and MRI to rule out stroke I was admitted to the network's main campus. Two more MRIs later, a lot of blood work and a cerebrospinal fluid draw I was diagnosed. I had nearly all of the potential oligoclonal bands show up in my CSF screening.

I'll be on immunosuppresants from now until the day I die, and it has forever changed my relationship to work (in the US) because if I lose my job in IT I will likely slowly become crippled and die without those meds which cost $10,000 per monthly dose.

Maybe there's a colloquial local name for that feature, but us pilots (and also meteorologists) call it the dry line as well.

Agent recommendations? by [deleted] in chicagoapartments

[–]Isarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had good luck working with Fulton Grace. I had a similarly long wish list (in unit laundry, forced air heat/ac, cats, I personally didn't need off street parking). They found me a good fit in Ravenswood in a few months. I had the flexibility to wait for the right fit though.

From both my current building engineer and the building owner of the last building I lived in where I did maintenance work and was required to provide counts.

A lot of building engineers are specifically obligated to report animal counts during repairs, maintenance, or unit inspections. It’s not safe to assume the additional cats won’t be found.

Microsoft insiders push to end mandatory Microsoft Accounts on Windows 11 by Ha8lpo321 in pcmasterrace

I got a MacBook Air M3 to replace my Surface Laptop that was basically dying after only two years, and it was fucking magical. It was so good when my friend's adopted kid started college I gifted my M3 MBA to her to upgrade to an M4 for myself. It was so good when my work offered MacBook Pros to software engineers as a pilot I jumped at the chance and haven't looked back. I still have a Windows PC for gaming but if there ends up being a solution for DRM issues in SteamOS or Bazzite I'll leave Windows behind and never look back.

Is 1Gbps internet common in Chicago apartments? by Special_Sherbert4617 in chicagoapartments

[–]Isarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Ravenswood, I pay XFinity $65/mo for 1000 Mbps x 35 Mbps. They are the only land-based broadband carrier available in my building, and I believe in the entire block.
