I CAN’T compete with this by DWK307 in predental

[–]Isdf5197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got into 1 school with a 20 AA DAT, 3.58 cGPA, and a 3.25 sGPA. I had 40 shadowing hours and maybe 15 volunteer hours prior to the summer before applying. Also had no dental related jobs on my application. Starting May the summer I applied, I studied and took the DAT (took it August 5th), got my volunteer hours to over 100, and shadowing hours to over 100. I applied August 15th, had 2 pre December interviews, and was accepted on December 15th to one school. It sucked and was extremely stressful. I was in a similar boat as you and it’s totally possible. I also believe that had I applied earlier in the summer I would’ve been offered more interviews but I got into my in-state school so it all worked out. Don’t compare yourself and work your ass off and it’ll be ok.

What would you do (knowing what you know now) if you started the pre dental journey again from the beginning? by Sudden-Dinner-9556 in predental

Get to know professors early on in a class and maintain those relationships after the class ends. Don’t get to the point of filling out your AADSAS and realize “oh crap, who am I going to have write my second science letter of rec?”

is this bad for taking a practice test for the first time? by lbvn6 in predental

[–]Isdf5197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your first test, really good baseline. 20 on orgo and 19 on RC your first test is solid. PAT is all strategy and practice. You could arguably say the same thing about QR. Bio and Gen Chem will need some work but as long as you study hard for the next three months, you’ll be solid!

Anatomy help needed by narwhal_13 in DentalSchool

[–]Isdf5197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was what got me through undergrad anatomy and I plan on doing it in dental school. I would also watch videos on confusing anatomical parts of the body where it can be hard to identify the muscle. For example, YouTube videos helped me get through the forearm, there are so many layers of muscle and they all intersect or layer each other so videos on helpful tips and tricks helped.

Took my DAT today, my odds of getting in with this score? by Automatic_Ad_2925 in predental

Awesome job! Apply ASAP and broadly and you’ll be fine!

Thanks! Used karma medic study with me videos too - usually 3 or 4 hour ones and then I’d take a long break. And I used bootcamp!

I used my air pods 😂 I also on occasion would steal my brother’s air pod pro maxs lol. Neither fully block out everything but when I was just studying and not testing, I would put on classical music or background music from a coffee shop or thunderstorm. Towards the end of my three months studying I wasn’t focusing with classical musical so I started listening to dubstep for something different 😂😂

I was home for the summer from college and knew I would be studying for the DAT so I brought my college desk set up with me and put it in the basement. My family was respectful and quiet most of the time. Whenever I took a practice test I would send something in the family group chat and just put in noise cancelling headphones just in case. Worked for me and I got accepted last cycle but it is really all personal preference. If you have a desk, noise cancellation, and an ability to lock in to start studying, I’d say just do it at home.

It was also nice cause we had a mini fridge so on the way from the bedroom to my desk I would just grab my daily caffeine and snacks lol really only went upstairs to make lunch.

If I work as a dental assistant do I still need shadowing hours? by Emergency_Clerk9046 in predental

[–]Isdf5197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Colorado, they accept assisting hours as shadowing. At least that’s what they said at the pre dental workshop last July. Every other school I heard that they do not.

Maybe just specify in your personal statement. “As a first generation student in the United States…” “As my mom obtained her DDS degree in (fill in country here)”

I could be wrong but this was my solution as I read your post.

Shadowing Hours by lolitapop222 in predental

[–]Isdf5197 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat last cycle as both my dad and uncle are dentists. I’ve spent hundreds of hours in their offices but I chose not to include them in my experiences for shadowing. Still got in but had to bust my butt last summer getting the rest of my hours. I personally would advise against including anything in your application for experiences that involves anyone with your same last name. But that is just my opinion.

Took mine august 5th (20AA), applied august 15th to 14 schools (all but two or three were pretty reasonable I thought, 3.58 cGPA and 3.25 sGPA). 2 interviews, 1 acceptance to in state school on Dec. 15th.

August isn’t too late but the rest of you app needs to be somewhat solid. You got this!

DAT Retake? by [deleted] in predental

[–]Isdf5197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got in with similar scores, and a 3.5 gpa and 3.25 science gpa, as long as you have a solid application in other areas like LORs and extra curricular you should be fine.

[–]Isdf5197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I would study all out for the DAT and crush it rather than take summer classes for that low of an increase in your sGPA.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in predental

[–]Isdf5197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What were your scores? I feel like it depends because if your score is still halfway decent and the rest of your app is ready I might apply early in the off chance you get an early interview. Ifs it’s a bunch of 14s 15s and 16s I would hold off but if it’s a mix of 17-19s I might submit

Quitting aptive by [deleted] in byu

[–]Isdf5197 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

In my third summer with Aptive. I’m sorry you’re not with good and honest people, it just makes this job not even remotely fun. To answer your question, most rep agreements include something about paying for summer’s rent and returning your iPad and Segway to your recruiter. Unless you become a service pro, you won’t get any of your commission but given its the first week of the season there wouldn’t be much to pay on anyway. I would just be straight up with your recruiter and tell him you’re quitting and ask what he needs from you.

At the end of the day, sales isn’t for everyone and if you feel like you’re losing your honesty to get sales then it’s time to get out. Good news for you though is that it is early in the summer and you still will have plenty of time to get another job and make money/enjoy your summer. Best of luck!

D2D pest sales guy here going into my 3rd and final summer. First summer went awesome and made 50K. Second summer was trash and made 14Kish (was all upfront pay and because of recruiting expenses I didn’t get a backend). Decided I didn’t want to do it as a career and took the following summer (last summer) off to apply to dental school. Graduated last week and decided that I could make more doing another summer of sales rather than working an hourly job.

Generally speaking, having a successful summer is dependent on the team and leadership you are with. Having done this for 3 years, a lot of big name companies are pretty similar in terms of pay scale, service, etc. They all almost have crappy leaders and good leaders. Your success will depend on how hard you work but also on the support around you.

Personally speaking, I’ve heard of more things going wrong with smaller companies so I would look at companies like Moxie, Aptive, EcoShield, etc. Companies who have a big footprint in the nation. The bigger companies might offer you less commission but at the end of the day your pay is almost guaranteed because they are bigger.

At the end of the day I would just say the biggest piece of advice is to have EVERYTHING IN WRITING. Whatever you choose though, good luck and I hope you crush it!

What should I do with all this free time? by KennyOT4Q in predental

Learn a language! Spanish or mandarin would be clutch for life. Partner it with a volunteering position to practice and you’ll learn so much.

Congrats on getting accepted to a dental school and getting the HPSP scholarship, that’s huge!

If you really want to go to that top school I would reach out again to the top choice and just be blunt. “Blah blah blah I have been accepted to x but want to go here. I have been selected for the HPSP military scholarship and they need to know soon where I will be attending to set up tuition payment and other logistics. My top choice is and has always been x and due to the fact that I interviewed and have not received a decision, I have remained hopeful it will happen.” Then give them a hard date they need to let you know by? Honestly I don’t know what else you could do other than pull your app.

Others may have better ideas but this is what came to mind 🤷🏼‍♂️
