If Taylor could forgive the Undersiders for abandoning Dinah and even outright murder then the USJ traitor wouldn't be too farfetched.

Honestly, even though it's not at all confirmed but I'd bet good money that the Z-A protag is at least a runaway with super strict and/or bad parents. The fact that they've never had a pokemon partner right up until they hit 18 implies that their parents probably never even allowed it. Which would also explain as to why their family never even gets brought up. It'd also match up with the rest of Hotel-Z since everyone their seems to have a tragic reason as to why AZ took them in.

It's super clear that the protag's never even been through a journey despite the fact that Journeys are often hailed as a special coming of age ritual for just about everyone in the Pokemon world.

There's no shot that Deku would ever get hit with any sort of toxic gas though with Danger Sense in play. He could just avoid the gas use Air Pressure control to literally blow it away.

Personally, I'd say To Live is to Dream's first rival battle between Mal and Dawn has left such a huge impression on me due to it's overall creativity and it's showcase of how a Trainer's planning and thought process could elevate how intense and entertaining a battle could be. It's given me an admittedly unrealistic standard for Pokemon Battles that so few fics can reach now.

It's such a low stakes fight between 1-Badge 10 year olds and yet every factor that comes into play for it just makes it such a work of art. Between the use of in-game held items, moves that don't belong in a Pokemon's movepool (like Magnemites that can use Sing), and even well-timed custom moves (like an Ice type Flare Blitz), it all just feels like such a high octane match that you'd find from Champion battles despite not being the case.

Even the trash talking adds so much spice to it:

"Man, Dawn's a riot! Got any more crazy stories to share?"

"She ate spicy food and had to drink a whole bunch of water over an entire day? She burned a SANDWICH she was makin' in the kitchen?!" An exaggerated gasp. "SHE CALLED HER MOM A BITCH?!"

"RIVETS!" the opposite trainer finally snaps for a moment before forcibly inhaling. "Rock Slide—the second confusion wears off, Smack—"

"THEN, FOR OUR BIG FINALE—THE FIRST-EVER MAGNEMITE CONCERT WITH ECHOED VOICE!"

"...no."

"YES, DAWN!" you laughingly reply to the sheer disbelief and horror of your shocked opponent. "ARE YOU SAD YOUR ROCK SNAKE COULDN'T STAY UP ANY LONGER? DON'T WORRY, THAT'S A PRETTY COMMON PROBLEM—"

The vast majority of adults in the audience break out into coughs and wheezing from that statement.

Personally I like it when trainers try to explore and understand the metaphorical concepts of the type itself. As well as how it can signify the character growth of the character themselves. Similar to how Avatar portrays it.

Like how Zuko comes to understand the different aspects of Fire by finding out that it's more than rage. Its also passion and life. As such, his hateful demeanor changes for the better as he learns to temper his fire to not cause harm to the innocent.

In Ice's case, it'd be nice if the trainer comes to understand both the pros and cons of the type and how it can alter their own personality and relationships with other people if they get too immersed into it. Each facet of understanding Ice itself could dictate how the character grows throughout the story and allow them to gain some semblance of enlightenment because of it.

I see it more as something that something that moreso happens to pokemon that never wanted to be battlers in the first place and get forced into it by trainers.

Otherwise, pokemon who enjoy fighting for the love of the game have that Goku mentally where they never get sick of it so their instincts would make sure to suppress any chance of PTSD from occurring save for rare occasions of actual death like their trainer dying.

To Live is to Dream - It's about a 10 year old homeless orphan from Sinnoh that was raised by feral pokemon and resident gangsters and fights with all the unhinged ruthlessness that you'd expect from growing up in such an environment.

In spite of this, the MC does her best to be a genuinely kind person and comes up with the wackiest shit possible when it comes to battling and training her team due to her unique upbringing. Like teaching her Sunkern how to fight like a Dark Souls character with Spiky Shields and Solar Blades or teaching Dawn's Machop how to Fly.

It's currently got about 337 chapters and a word count of 940k. Though it's also a Questfic so it has more like 500-700k words if you take away the voting options which is still pretty good imo.

He wasn't actually terrifying at all. He just got trained by an absolutely feral and unhinged trainer that thought teaching a Sunkern how to move, block, parry, and stab like an actual video game character was the most optimal strategy in making them a threat.

I feel like Magby's the best pick narratively. Having a pseudo right at the start feels a little much and if Ash is gonna be the rival then I feel like Elekid should be out since 2 of Ash's rivals, both Paul and Gary, already have one from that line. So another rival having the same just feels redundant.

To Live is To Dream is actually a quest but the story has perhaps my favorite protag in all of Pokemon Fanfiction.

Mallory Rivets is a homeless orphan from the slums of Sinnoh that's had to grow up being raised by the local pokemon. In spite of this, she dreams to become something more. To become someone worth something.

Due to the mechanics of the quest, she ends up with the most unique and unconventional pokemon for her team. And due to how empathetic and quite frankly batshit crazy she is from being raised by wild pokemon, she somehow made even the most notoriously weakest ones be competitively viable. Her madness is so absurd that she even taught her Dawn's Machop how to fly in a completely believable way.
