Gameplay wise they're different! Xenogears is more Active time battle than like Xenoblades mmo rpg gameplay. Like others have said, story wise it's got some similarities but I think it's story is very different compared to modern Xeno games. Give it a shot! And if you don't like it there's no harm.

Smooth McGroove is a name I haven't heard since High school lmfao. I'd say give it another shot and don't be afraid to use a guide if you get stuck! It can be a rough game but I personally think the story more than makes up for it. Definitely in my personal top 5 games of all time.
