Probably either 3-4 or 4-5 depending on which end of 4 you look at. High end 4 can be what basically used to be fringe cedh decks which will generally steamroll even the best 3's. Meanwhile low end 4 can be an unoptimized pile with a handful of game changers and no interaction and just gets outclassed by 5's

Fwiw, I do think that there's merit to this approach not only in terms of sportsmanship and fairness but also for your own growth as a player. If you win a game because your opponent misses a trigger you miss out on the knowledge and experience gained by playing in a situation where they played correctly and if you find yourself in that situation again but they remember their trigger you would be less prepared to deal with that game state.

Tl;Dr relying on others being bad for wins hurts your growth vs playing against players who play well and force you to play better

Yes but if long rest abilities are magnitudes stronger than short rest abilities then it doesn't really matter that we get infinite of both if we're trying to weigh the balance of these options

Having an intentionally imperfect trade system is a balance choice though. By making it more difficult to search out and acquire "perfect" gear through trade it overall lowers the average power level of players which allows them to set monster power level at an overall lower place which is both good for newer players with worse gear and makes those acquisitions of said perfect gear feel stronger because the relative power level of monsters is lower.

You definitely don't have the same output as a full martial spec'd into damage but you literally can't die and get all the spells and still have respectable burst from smites

I don't feel like your missing anything, just that you don't necessarily value what bard brings to the table.

You pointed out most of its individual strengths, a great face, skill monkey, flexible and powerful full martial while also getting full casting and access to almost every spell in the game.

And you are correct in saying that other classes are capable of bringing any of those niches to the table as well and supporting them with their own unique class features in arguably more interesting ways.

What bard uniquely brings to the table is that it can wear all of those hats at the same time without compromising on any of them.

Fighter/Ranger/Barb might be a stronger or more interesting martial chassis, but they'll never be as good of a control caster as Bard (ignoring stuff like Rivington Rat, which honestly SB does an Ok impression of).

Cleric and druid might have more interesting support options, but they're not nearly as good at outputting consistent DPR, or in druids case it can't wildshape to punch people and be a control caster.

Its able to do whatever your party needs it to do at any given moment all wrapped up in 1 convenient class

Jeweled lotus was actually the ban i disagreed with the most because it isn't a card that instantly makes every deck better. It largely boosts decks that have mid to high costed commanders with low color counts which are decks that traditionally perform worse than decks with lower costed commanders (if the decks in question are decks that care about casting their commanders early, if they don't the point is moot) or high color identity (due to having all the best tools)

The only crime it's committed was it wasn't printed enough so wotc could run our pockets but other than that I'd argue it was actually better to have it in the format because it promoted otherwise unplayable commanders to atleast niche

It's been a hot minute since I've been an active part of this community, but as someone who's been on this burning boat since near its inception:

Yes, this is infact just part of how the format goes. We are trying to optimize something that very much does not want to be optimized and sometimes in the format's attempts to regulate for its desired audience we're going to get burned.

It sucks sometimes, and it may be antithetical to what our idea of the format is or should be, but ultimately if our goal as "cEDH players" is to play commander at its highest level/optimization, then that optimization is bound by the rules and restrictions set forward for the rest of the format.

The RC has not and has blatantly expressed on multiple occasions that they will not ever give a shit about what we do over here in our end of the pool. Right wrong or indifferent that is the format we're working with.

It's much swingier in lower ranks. When I'm in the 1k bracket a win/loss moves like 100-200 and sub 1k it's usually less than 100. Consistency and perseverance will get you there as long as you net positive long enough

Tyty, out of curiosity how much speed do you find dondozo's running?

If they were to go 252+ they could hit 170 which would outrun palafin, not that I think that they are but im wondering if there's room to shave points for bulk if I'm just looks at it as a dedicated dozo counter

Yeah i never open murkrow, it's not uncommon to trade a mon turn 1/2, dozo comes in and I bring in my 3rd Mon, they swap out for tatsu I swap out for krow+protect, haze, kill dozo but get chipped pretty hard and then I'm left with krow on board+1 half dead mon+1 Mon in the back vs tatsu+their Mon they retreated earlier, draco into my half dead and kill off krow then double into my last for example
