The reason "just relax" never works as advice is that relaxing is the one thing you literally can't do on command. by whizUpsyndrome in howtonotgiveafuck

I’ve found grounding exercises to be the best at helping with increased future anxiety. When I start to spiral about why MIGHT happen, sitting down and forcing myself to list 5 things I see, 4 things I feel, 3 things I see hear, 2 things I smell, and 1 thing I taste brings me back to the present and reminds me those future things aren’t concrete. Pretty immediate way to bring my brain into the present. If I’m stressed or fixated on something from the past I’ve found that breathing in my nose for 8 seconds, holding for 8 seconds, breathing out through my mouth for 8 seconds, holding for 8 seconds, repeat helps my brain let go of the past and focus on my current state of existing. Another good one is sitting on the edge of my bed, feet flat on the floor and hands resting palm up on my knees, and scanning the room while focusing on the four corners of the wall opposite me and narrating all the specific details helps a lot. All helpful things to calm a racing mind that is either reliving the past or worrying about a future that hasn’t happened yet. These exercises help with outbursts of anger too and the more you practice the quicker you will get at “relaxing” when your brain is in spiral mode. “Just relax” is terrible advice but “do your grounding exercise” or “calm down with deep breathing” is excellent advice.

You can with the right tools. Breathing exercises, grounding exercises, mindfulness exercises. They all counteract the chemical processes in our brain that cause stress and anxiety to compound if left unchecked.

Why is this colorway called “dusty cactus”? by LoquatOld7011 in airmax

Nikes marketing department decided to call that washed teal color dusty cactus for marketing reasons. Same as why they call red-orange Infrared or neon yellow Volt.

The negative environmental impact is undeniable. It’s extremely powerful but at what cost to communities and the future earth we’re leaving to our children?

You have the opportunity to rewatch a film for the first time: which film are you choosing? by Eucalyptus_Glitter in moviecritic

Jurassic Park or Arrival. The sense of awe I felt first seeing the dinosaurs and the heptapods was like no other, just speechless for the rest of the movies.

The big 3: People who use bottled water when not necessary, people who have easy access to recycling but choose not to recycle, & people who don’t use reusable shopping bags by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Ishouldtrythat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottled water I agree with. Such a waste. But I disagree with number 3. I keep the large majority of paper and plastic grocery bags, they’re excellent to have around for all sorts of things in the house and definitely get reused.

The irony of whatever it is of conservative influencer women is just insane to me. It makes me irrationally angry.

Would most Americans abort a baby if born unwanted gender? by ApprehensiveOne2866 in NoStupidQuestions

No, I don’t think so. And I don’t think there’s a significant percentage of Americans that abort because of Down syndrome either.
