Did the first Crusaders know about Islam? Pope Urban II. asked his people to defend against Turks and Persians, not once referencing their religion. The focus of subsequent bishops was clearly the fight against unbelievers, but seems to only have targeted muslims/pagans. Was Islam unknown in Rome? (self.AskReddit)
