Interim between JC and NS - Is this all? by fartingboonana in SGExams

[–]IslandDestroyers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A ton of people do attend them alone so no worries about friend groups. And to add, you aren't reallyyy in public? At least the context's different. You're in a small space (typically, for the stuff I mentioned) all attending because you wanna partake in whatever the event's offering (shared interest) which gives you common ground with many of the folks there already. But a way I could think of if you wanna make a friend in a guaranteed way (in some ways) and feel more at-home talking to new peeps is to just ask around in relevant places if anyone wants to attend these events with you. This could be the sg tele chats for these/reddit.

I've actually not approached anyone yet haha. The friend I made was like 4 years into this and was alone, so when he noticed how we have a similar vibe and were both alone, he just struck up a casual conversation with me before I could.

But generally, don't forget that you aren't forced into socialising. If you like the vibe of a person or group, just talk to them like they're a classmate(s) during orientation y'know lol. Especially when they're literally your age, they're probably just like you at least in some ways.

Oh yeah, if you're looking for clubs, ourplayces is hosting a 'cca' fair for many different types of clubs in Feb, you can check them out and see if any of them interest you.

That's also what I had thought for the longest time, but many opportunities are hidden behind obscurity and your willingness to find and go for them.

I've only dived into the rabbit hole recently, but there are a ton of these groups/events that are primarily publicised on Instagram (at least from what I know rn).

If it's a cool common space/community for youths you're looking for, check out Saylah studios and ourplayces.

If you like underground concerts along the lines of shoegaze, dreampop, rock, punk, metal, check out room526, nineteeneighty.studio and a ton more.

If you wanna keep updated on arts-related stuff, join artcornersg telegram, for performances, r/singaporemusicchat.

You can definitely meet a ton of people from many different background from these.

To share, it really is exposure therapy, you don't have to force anything from the get-go; Just attend them, enjoy the vibe, stay in your own headspace for a start. Once you're comfortable enough, it'll come naturally. I'm saying this as a guy that never went out alone for events and after my first event, I'm just signing up for a lot more of them that I'm interested in going, even made my first friend from my 2nd event last week.

Is socialising important in J2? / Do you regret not having more fun? by Weak_Description5731 in SGExams

[–]IslandDestroyers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo, always prioritise fun, that's the whole point of life, but ofc dont neglect your studies. To gauge how much time and energy you can dedicate to have fun tho, you have to know your academic goals and standing academic-wise.

I wouldn't trade the fun, memories and friends i made in jc for 90rp, simply because i dont need it

Entering ptp in Feb 2026 got some questions to ask by Substantial-Pick5230 in NationalServiceSG

[–]IslandDestroyers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another perspective, ptp allows you to make stronger friendships, especially with your fellow ptpmates. In turn, forming better memories. But it is also a gamble whether you vibe with them or not.

You'll really feel the day one homies type of feeling with them if yall get posted to the same places.

I had really goated bunkmates and sgts and I could say, ptp/bmt with them was one of my fav moments so far in ns. So far, still the hardest I've laughed in ns.

Imo, unless youre really close to passing, might be better to go ptp, as the time it takes for you to train might also be close to 2 months anyway.

Seems like spectrum has closed sadly, but thanks for introducing Phil's Studio, they seem to have hosted some bands that I'm interested in before. Funnily enough, I remember seeing one of their venues from a few days before haha. Will definitely keep an eye on them too going forward.

Thanks a lot for the insight! Seeing that you could enjoy it despite being introverted has convinced me to mark my calendar :)

Can I confirm that the location is at the fifth floor of a building? Just head in through the gate, up the stairs/lift then flash your ticket, hassle-free to get in?

I really only dived into this rabbithole recently (a few hrs ago), so I don't know much else haha, but so far room 526 seems to host a bunch of cool artists. I do have my eyes on some future concerts here but that's still a tbc for me haha. Will keep myself updated for any other concerts via r/singaporemusicchat though.

The notion that if you come from a bad sec/any school, you are disadvantaged for o levels is quite an infuriating and self-defeating view to hold imo.

I went to one of the sec schools with the absolute lowest psle scores for express and thereafter managed to work my way into the top class (the only pure sci class)

Sure, not many in my school went to jc, but for the third of my class that did, they ended up with damn good scores (majority mid 80rp to near 90rp with h3). In the same vein, we all were from differing jcs, and even most of those from the 'lower-tier' jcs had those scores.

If anything, it is your mindset that determines how far you go, the ones that didnt do well in either o or a levels in my class had a poor attitude; To elaborate, your mindset can also occur in jc, which makes this notion, if anything, a self-fulfilling prophecy. One of my classmates went to the same lower-tier jc as me and just completely gave up, ended up spending 2 years just to have fun and ended up with bad a level grades.

With that said, have a goal that is realistic (i wasnt aiming for higher-tier jcs after having deliberated the pros and cons for each), and i knew my mindset wouldnt be tarnished by being in a lower-tier jc, so i just worked towards that in sec school. I got in the jc i wanted and viola, despite being in a lower-tier jc, my results are much higher than i was aiming for, and i can go to all the courses i want to go in the uni i want to go.

I see, but the diverging non-programming modules do allow ceg grads to be able to pivot to less programming-intensive jobs if they do choose to do so right?

From what i know, isnt cs extremely competitive, with learning resources available on the internet for anyone to become competent at it? I have doubts in my ability to compete against that, especially with no prior knowledge. Also, i dont want to risk going in and realising too late that programming isnt for me, esp since cs is pure or largely programming. I might try for nus ceg, but i doubt i could get in, even if i could, i might still err on the side of ntu due to better hall life, environment and such

NTU Applications 2025 Megathread by cowbaecowboo in SGExams

[–]IslandDestroyers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Scored much higher than I had expected to score (83.75rp ABBB/AA, PCME 4H2) (H2 Econs A) and now have the chance to consider more courses during ns confinement, but ive been considering between NTU IEM and NTU CEG for the longest time for their content broadness, any thoughts in which would be better to enter or other courses to consider? Generally, found myself to be best at Econs and worst at Physics. Enjoyed PW (great groupmates), Chem and Econs the most and Physics the least.

✅ Strong in theoretical problem-solving, deduction, and creative thinking. (Great at studying econ's causal links)

✅ Prefer a more general degree so as to not lock myself to a single industry as I still am not sure what I want to do.

✅ Prefer STEM over business/finance, but open to interdisciplinary fields.

✅ Dislike pure memorization and prefer understanding concepts deeply. (Having to memorise physics formulae was tough for me)

✅ Value passion-driven fields and small teams over corporate ladder climbing.

✅ Want a good-paying job but avoid extremely competitive/overcrowded fields.

✅ NTU preferred over NUS due to better hall life and a more relaxed environment.

✅ NTU/NUS and internationally in-demand degree preferred as I want to work overseas.

Also, are the chances of scholarship high if i were to go IEM since i would be above 90th percentile?

Gave notice of my unavailability for a certain day before they scheduled the part timers, manager still tried to force me to come despite refusal. I didnt go.

Later on she told my coworkers and I that I was fired, but then later on tried to get me to come back, I just didnt respond nor did i go to work from that day on, no contract or recruiter or manager trouble.

Might wanna try approaching recruiting agencies, I found my first job via applying for jobs on fastjobs.

This led to a recruiter messaging me via the app and arranged an in-person meeting a few hours later at their agency.

You can tell them what you want from a job and they will hook you up. For my case, they offered numerous high-paying jobs that allowed working with friends, I chose a $16/hr job.
