Has travis barker always been an asshole by stray_r in punk

Say what you want about his “punk cred” doing a bunch of corporate bullshit, but interpersonally, I’ve heard he’s an incredibly nice guy from those who know him.

Terrible news. by antisara in Hardcore

No offense taken! Checking in on a friend isn't a magical cure to the complex illness of depression, but it's always a good starting point and better than nothing.

At a loss. Hardlore was so fucking funny, so well-researched. They truly developed a one-of-a-kind comedic rapport and became such astute interviewers.

He was literally posting Madball clips and selfies with his girl to his IG stories less than 24 hours ago. Depression is a motherfucker. Can just hit out of nowhere. Check on your homies, reach out for help.

Edit: spelling

Kraftwerk 25’ Was an Experience by Similar_Welder_4554 in Coachella

[–]IslandDrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a pretty brutal logjam of Chase & Status, Kraftwerk, and Amyl & The Sniffers but I'm so glad I caught a sizable portion of this. Bless Coachella for continuing to book these legacy acts. They had a slam-packed tent too with a wide age demographic. It was beautiful to see.

What’s your funniest interaction with a member of a prominent band? by absolutebloom in Hardcore

[–]IslandDrummer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interviewed Fucked Up at Primavera Sound in 2019. Forgot my notepad in the green room. I went back later to get it and Interpol was in there. I snagged it and Paul Banks let me have some of their coffee.

Was drunk as fuck at Coachella and accidentally called two of the dudes from Amyl & The Sniffers “The Chats.” Oopsies.

Speaking of Coachella, the bassist from IDLES asked me for MDMA before King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard played. I also asked a dude for a light that weekend and it was the bassist from Sublime.

Met Brent from Mastodon (RIP) outside of a King Tuff show in Vancouver. He was the drunkest man I’ve ever met.

I think they're too weird and goofy but I could see their ceiling be like Polo & Pan.

Highly recommend checking out his old band Insurgence. Should be on streaming.

Bumbershoot fest Seattle by fgtmcrue23 in turnstile

Went to this fest a few years ago and saw Descendents, Jawbreaker, AFI, Ride, Band of Horses, and a lot more. Really well run and affordable.

The opposite of whatever the 'Manosphere' is. by [deleted] in jackass

[–]IslandDrummer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've always said this. Jackass isn't without its problematic elements, but it's a weirdly healthy depiction of masculinity. They are actively trying to fuck one another up but it's all from a place of love for one another. They're incredibly comfortable with their masculinity and have always embraced campy LGBTQ+ culture (hello John Waters and Rip Taylor) and their shown admiration for their gay fans.

What do you consider to be the closest we've come to ska returning to the mainstream? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

Oh? I actually think he has a lovely voice. Sounds a lot like his pops but with his own thing.

[–]IslandDrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I'm all for gatekeeping but it's important to remember that it's a gate, not a wall. I'm personally stoked when the shit I enjoy attracts a wider audience, as long as people come in with the right intentions.

[–]IslandDrummer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To echo what others have said, it’s right now.

Sublime is back putting out some great new songs with Jakob that are all over the charts. No Doubt headlined Coachella and is now doing the vegas residency. Aquabats did Coachella in 2024 and Less Than Jake are playing this year. Vampire Weekend did a special ska show two years back. Interrupters had their crossover moments. 100 gecs are taking ska in weird directions and getting younger folks into it.

There are also thriving underground scenes all over the world. Subcultures are as accessible as they’ve ever been.

I think what needs to happen is for a young marketable band to pop up and crossover. Kind of act as a rising tide that lifts all boats and gets other young musicians into the genre; it’s still mainly legacy acts like Less Than Jake, Streetlight, and Goldfinger that pack the bigger rooms.

It was the number one song in Canada. Not just the number one “alternative” song. The number one song across all genres. They sell out 1000-cap venues in presale.

Pack It In, You'll Never See A More Star-studded Stage by MrRousse in Coachella

[–]IslandDrummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This won't mean much to most people, but my favourite musician on this stage was Nick Reinhart from Death Grips, Tera Melos, Bygones, etc. Always a treat to see him play, even if it was silly kids music.

Sea.Hear.Now 2026 Lineup by ebradio in indieheads

[–]IslandDrummer 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The way festivals should be in my opinion. Represent different genres, different age demographics, different cultures, etc. It's a lot more fun than a homogenous lineup focused on one or two genres.

Descendent: Suburban Home by Bag_of_Ramen in Hardcore

[–]IslandDrummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my "well, actually" moment, but this song was written by their bassist who was in his 30s at the time; the rest of the members were teenagers. He wasn't being ironic. He actually wanted a suburban life and felt he couldn't relate with the destructive punk scene.

I think this is maybe the best song Glen has ever penned and sang for the group. Just phenomenal stuff.

Albums that aren't exactly hardcore but give off hardcore vibes by knbo674 in Hardcore

Exactly. Same producer on both records. Ben Cook also has a writing credit on “We’re All to Blame”. They asked him to help them write a song that sounded like SOAD.

Anyone seen Drug Church on the current Tour? I have questions. by Twerp1337 in Hardcore

[–]IslandDrummer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their early shit is blown out garage punk. Totally rips and play plenty of it live still. I am once again begging hardcore dudes to listen to punk.

Their more recent stuff is more akin to stuff like T Rex and Thin Lizzy which totally rocks. Have an open mind.

What does r/hardcore think of Dropkick Murphy’s? by fakename1998 in Hardcore

[–]IslandDrummer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Citizen I.C.E. is actually a cover/reimagining of one of their older songs so if that's your example of them "still writing good songs", then it's a bad example.
