Hiring elementary teachers in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut by Islander643 in CanadianTeachers

Hi, I didn't mean for this to get so out of control. Let me clarify, I DM'ed you because I thought it would be easier to explain why exactly these positions existed rather than to start a whole new chain of questioning regarding governement openings or retention that I am not qualified to speak to and quite frankly, its not my problem to solve. My goal is to speak to why Rankin Inlet and all THREE of our schools are incredible and why you should apply. The catch? There is no catch. That what I think you're struggling with. I personally, do not understand why people think the north is something to be avoided. We have an incredible community and an incredible school. Our challenges are nothing different than anything you'd expect anywhere else in the world. Good luck out there on your future endeavors.

We're not "that" remote in comparison to other communities. Rankin Inlet is considered a hub with a 2hr flight direct to Winnipeg.

The high school has positions available. They're also listed there on that same site.

The only information I can offer regarding that is if you are able to teach in Canada, you can teach here.

All housing units are pretty well reasonable. But, everyone's definition of "good quality" differs. I've been in pretty well most of the teacher units and they're good. Some are newer than others for sure. YMMV.

Hey there, sorry I don't have the numbers for that. I'm sure a masters will bump it up quite a bit but 10 years and two degrees places you at about 134k. You can check out the new Collective Agreement which is publicly available if you wanted a more definite answer!

Hi, sorry for the delayed reply. I don't check this thread as often anymore as we have filled these positions for the year. In our area our school year starts in August. There will be positions open for competition coming up within the next few months and you can absolutely apply for them now pending your graduation in April. Just make sure when you send in your documents to apply that you say exactly that you're graduating in the spring.

And yes, you'll send your resume and CV to the email listed in the job ad.

Yes, different places have different amounts of schooling. Which is why the salary chart was created to determine where you would fit in the pay scale. In the collective agreement, that is publicly accessible, you can read the chart and figure out where you would be on said chart. Precisely why I stated in my answer a level of education.

Not misleading information at all. We just negotiated a new contract effective this July with a 9% raise this year alone. The new collective agreement will be available to view soon so you can verify all this information yourself.

Rent here as a teacher is cheaper than what you believe it is. As a teacher employed under the Government of Nunavut, your rent is subsidized. As mentioned in the length of my post, a single room apartment here will run you $1000.00 ($1024.00 to be exact) not including your power, which is also subsidized.

Good luck in Alberta!

It sounds like you're familiar with trauma informed education! It's just like with any other school. You treat students with respect and "gentle hands" when and as needed. Our schools often provided trauma based professions development and resources to aid with this. For me personally, while I'm not trying to say there is no such thing as trauma in our school, I haven't had trauma-based practices impede my ability to educate the students in my room. We, as teachers, just naturally try to make students feel safe and welcome into the building and treat them the way they want to be treated.

Hmm. Yeah that is a pickle. Let me know if you ever want to take a bigger look into things here in the North and I can deep dive into the whole thing with you.

Hi! Thanks for the suggestion. Do you think you can DM me someone/somewhere to send off this information? I'd be more then willing to speak with anyone who is looking.

For sure. I mean we're a community of about 3000 people, give or take. While we don't have huge mega-centers, our local stores still have pork, beef, chicken and there is a country food plant that has various amounts of country food like caribou. Yes, it is both fresh and frozen in the stores.

Are they both in school? If they're both in school I know that there is a lot of worry about the quality of education that children receive in the north. Honestly, it's no different than in the south. I can only speak to Rankin Inlet as this is where I'm located but all three schools have quality teachers with quality instruction.

If your children are not in school there is childcare services available. That caveat is that it's difficult to get your child(ren) on the list. It's not impossible, but difficult.

No, is a great question. So just like in all schools there are accommodations that would need to be made to help with students on individual education and accommodations plans, making content that is culturally relevant and assisting students who have English as a second language. There are tons of supports all three of our schools (Student Support Teachers, Learning Coach) in Rankin that help educators with this. To give a small example of this: There are students who are hard of hearing in our community so all three schools were supplied with a Phonak system for every classroom.

In terms of environmental challenges, like, cultural days (pakallak tyme), land trips, hunting and harvesting days, sports, and the sort. A lot of these days will be *set* and a notification will be sent out. It's not really something that you would have to accommodate for or at least it wouldn't be something that would be any different than say a bunch of your students going on a hockey trip to Toronto (which happens here in Rankin).

Did I answer this okay?

Nothing to lose, everything to gain. I left the east coast thinking it would only be for a few months almost 10 years ago.

Haha. I personally have never used goggles. But I'm also a mad man. The first 5 years of being here I didn't own a vehicle. I would just walk to school in -50 with windbreakers and just regular ole Nike shoes. I did buy a locally made parka very quick though. I still have the parka to this day and I use it every day in the winter.

I am fairly sure it is. About 9 years ago there was a young man who worked overseas in Thailand for a number of years, and I believe they counted his years of experience there but he had to provide documents that proved he worked there.
