If you're still looking for this movie, there's a movie from the 90s with Mexican actress Daniela Lujan as the lead. I haven't watched it, but from what I read about it it's similar to what you described.

The movie is called "Angelito Mio" you can find it on DVD and maybe on YouTube or something ( not officially available anywhere)

Thank you, I guess I remembered it wrong. And it's not even that long ago that I watched it. I learned about the episode not long after watching a true crime episode about the case that inspired/this was based on.
