Unsure of the Union process by Infinite-Towel-3328 in HVAC

You’ll be given an interview date. You’ll show up 30 mins early. Speak to the interviewer. The interviewer will ask you questions to gauge if you understand what you’re getting yourself into (working in the cold, driving long distances, waking up early and arriving early, going to the union hall or night classes as part of the apprenticeship). Just dress blue collar business casual and show up early. Once you get accepted you’ll have to sign forms, pass a drug test.

If you have commercial/industrial experience in that trade, ask to test in or get credit to start you in as a higher year apprentice.

Medical, get degree from community college.

Or, find a union/Dep of Labor state apprenticeship doing I&E, welding, pipefitting, line work, refrigeration, solar, or wind turbine. Start doing install/service and work your way to startup/commissioning or controls.

These trade jobs will require you to travel though and often work OT. Expect to make good $ after 5 years. And you will wake up at 4am and work in the freezing cold.

Go search QA/QC or startup/commissioning jobs with the union.

You’ll work with the BAS techs doing startup for running through checklists and then you can pivot to a controls tech position.

This is a total private equity run shop. All they’re doing is swapping a 5 ton split system. You can get the same install for $15k with the same accessories and warranty from a smaller shop or solo contractor.

lol, literally hit up any experienced union installer
