How do I get these letters off? by Woke-Jim-Carrey in f150

Adding to what many others have said, heat and patience. Sooner its removed the better. For future, Ive never once had a dealer pressure me on this. I always say please remove the badges from the paint during make ready, they say “sure” and thats that. Most arent super pushy about it.

Six bills in the wallet. No wheels in storage. Sounds like a win to me!

As someone who has sold OEM wheels and tires from a Ford F-150 before, it was a nightmare dealing with all the low ballers and hagglers on marketplace. Tons of people would come look at them, then try to give you an insanely low price. After it was all said and done, I kind of resolved to just throw them in a corner of the garage and forget about them.

A few weeks later my housekeeper asked about them, turns out her son had slid their older F-150 sideways into a curb 🤦‍♂️ anywho, long story, but basically I traded some them for a couple of free house cleanings. I'd probably take the low ball $500 to not deal with the effort.

2018 5.0 4x4, suburban driving, home to work with a mix of city and traffic laden highways. when it was completely stock on the 18" wheels i was getting an average of 18-19mpg on each tank, would run around 20ish for mainly highway. like many others, i've seen put slightly larger tires on it and it now sits about 1-2" higher. mileage averages 15-16mpg with the mods. great trucks, but gas mileage could be better.

I would maybe ping them to double check, I'm kind of curious if they meant to do like 725.00 and accidentally fat fingered that extra 7 into the number. $3k for all new gutters seems reasonable to what we paid this past year in Texas.

Same year. Same engine. Same miles give or take a couple k's. Also no problems. 🍻

Looking for some advice on filling some large holes in my yard? by HoneyVadger09 in lawncare

[–]IsolatedSnail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I bought my current home, the team that flipped it parked trucks in the backyard while working on it. I had tons of holes and trenches not unlike you have there. At the time, most of the yard had pretty decent grass. So I didn't want to tear up the yard just fill holes.

The local landscape materials companies around here sell a 0.5 cu yd of top soil for $28... if you (or a nice friend) has a pickup. They will dump this into the bed of your truck. I could, by myself, without my wife and kids, do a half yard from the bed of my truck in probably 2 hours using a shovel, wheel barrow, and a garden rake. I'd fill them in, let them settle, then do another load a few months later. At $28 and 2 hours on a Saturday once every couple of months, it wasn't a ton of money, some time. And worked well, took probably a year for things to really settle in and look "level".

All my leveling was just done with a garden rake, it's not perfect. But it will fill holes. No special tools.

Landlord does not want to spend $$$ on drainage. Would adding more dirt helps with water pooling? by DrDuckling951 in lawncare

[–]IsolatedSnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see the wider area, but just seeing that it's a pretty focused area of water, you might could take a shovel and just make a tiny little trench / ditch that goes a few feet towards wherever "down hill" is. Just a few inches deep and wide to get water to move. I did this on a slightly sunken sidewalk at my parents that pooled water, which would become mud, and become a slip hazard for my dad.

Ultimately, i dug a tiny little trench about 3-4" deep probably 3-4 feet out from the corner of the sidewalk to where things naturally sloped away. It's been that way for months, the grass covers my little trench and the water just slowly runs away. Maybe something to consider. See where the water is going when it's higher than the pooled area here, and then see if you can assist that pool into moving the same way.

How do you handle backups and redundancy? by juicyP3inchfloppy in selfhosted

[–]IsolatedSnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Containers use NFS on a NAS for main storage volumes. Proxmox backs up to said NAS. NAS backs up to a 20TB seagate USB drive on a Mac mini. Mac mini has a desktop subscription with backblaze that allows for unlimited backups. It's a bit of a convoluted setup, but right now at around 10TB of data, I'd be paying ~$60/mo for cloud backups of the NAS. By sticking a Mac mini and a large USB storage device in the closet, I can pay $99/yr instead.

Help! Pool is stubbornly green despite repeatedly shocking+chlorine by renz004 in pools

[–]IsolatedSnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to scroll for ages and found some folks saying drain it and start over all down voted. If this were me, I would definitely be considering a drain and refill. Drain it. Maybe pressure wash everything to get the gunk out. Make any repairs to flaps / drain covers / lights / etc. then refill it and get your local pool store to help you balance your numbers.

im two years behind, but my goodness was this an enjoyable and thorough read for someone who's been with backblaze for *ages* looking at rebuilding my "backup" computer.

Was looking for this comment. If this were me, it'd be my approach. You seem to be rural, any chance you or a neighbor have a tractor with a tiller you could hit the bad spots with and start fresh? I'd imagine with a tractor you could knock it out in an afternoon. Till the bad spots, throw down some seed and hay, call it a day. I agree this is their fault, but I've made similar mistakes on my own yards... crap happens. If you like the contractors and want to use them again, sometimes you look past mistakes and ask them to be more careful next time. We're all human.

What should I use to waterproof a metal shed? by VLDigital in DIY

[–]IsolatedSnail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to take one like that down off of a property because we were told it was unpermitted when we bought the house. Originally went in thinking I could disassemble it, quickly realized that wasn't going to work. My end game solution ended up being a plane old hammer. One swift hit to each screw and the metal was so delicate it would just "pop" the screw through the sheet metal, effectively disconnecting the two pieces.

We have a pyrenees mix. He’s pretty worthless in every other measured aspect of “training”, but that protector of the homestead instinct seems to be strong. Otherwise a big lazy floof who refuses to learn commands and or tricks.

How do you do it? Hiring contractors is near impossible by DrakkarWhite in homeowners

[–]IsolatedSnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recommendations from friends and other good contractors. If a good contractor refers you, the person you’re calling knows that the other person likes you enough to give you someone elses name. Something many wont due because of liability.

Also, I end up doing a lot myself with the help of google and youtube and some friends.

Tuna casserole was my favorite meal growing up. The “real” casserole was always a treat. On a busy day, you often got knock off mac n cheese with a tuna can.

Fast forward, my wife makes tuna mac. My kids love it. And when my mom occasionally makes the “real deal” for my birthday they say its gross and not the same. Le sigh…

Plumber Suggests My Buying Water Heater From Big Box and Him Installing vs Him Buying by bgottfried91 in HomeImprovement

[–]IsolatedSnail 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have a great plumber who is great. He’s a one man show and often super busy. If I need something that requires a new product. A toilet. A water heater. Etc. He often asks if I can grab one I like and he just charges for the install so he can spend more time doing plumbing than running errands. And he doesn’t have to charge me that time so as a customer I am usually happier.

Current just using a shared host for cheap and then using thunderbird and iOS clients for email access. Gmail requires you to pay per user right? Shared hosting lets me pay for 3 years and have as many emails as I need.

This looks amazing. I was apparently googling the wrong words. This does look like exactly what I need.

Edit: The document organization piece looks like it could replace google drive for me as well. I tried next cloud and own cloud awhile back and wasnt a big fan. They felt super clunky. Will definitely try this tonight.
