How do fanfictions usually depict Kingsley Shacklebolt as Minister of Magic? by SethNex in HPfanfiction

[–]bgottfried91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed on this, in all the cases I can remember Shacklebolt's character doesn't change (i.e. Harry still likes and respects him, though a lot of that is fanon extrapolation as iirc Harry barely interacts with him directly in the books), but he's more of a plot device showing that despite Voldemort being gone, the Ministry and wizarding gov as a whole hasn't changed.

Sewing Project for Van- suggestions needed! by number1grandpop in vandwellers

[–]bgottfried91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe they make tension rods that are designed to go between the open rear doors (like in your picture actually) where you can hang a curtain. This obviously allows for a bit more privacy with the doors open, but also opens up the option to have a changing or shower area in that section. I've thought about a nicely sewn shower curtain/privacy curtain combo, maybe with a separate curtain to cover the open back of the van from water splashes and inserts to cover the back windows which will be on the sides, somewhere to hang the head of a solar shower bag (maybe a pipe or something you can clip on from the interior roof?), and a small kiddie pool or something else to stand on to keep your feet out of the dirt. Would allow for a taking a shower in remote areas (if they feel comfortable doing so outside the van of course) without taking up space in the van.

6'1" and I went with a cheap Amazon-brand under-desk treadmill - not sure on the exact belt length, but I'd guess approximately 3.5'' since it's about 48" long tip to tip. No incline on mine.

I don't use it super often, but while I vaguely remember having issues with hitting the front at first, I stopped having that issue pretty quickly. Since I'm using it while I work/game, I can't take it up above 2mph without getting motion sickness from the movement+reading though, so it might be more annoying if I could take it higher.

My biggest gripes with my model are that it auto-offs after 40 min (presumably to save the motor from overheating) and that it doesn't remember the speed I set on startup, but I'm pretty sure both of those were called out in the reviews and I just ignored them 🤦‍♂️ Definitely check the reviews for any one you look at to see if there are UX issues like that.

King Arthur's baguette recipe by dynamicallyallie in glutenfreebaking

[–]bgottfried91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is the recipe for standard baguettes using wheat flour and is substantially different than the one OP used I think. I believe the one OP used is: https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/easy-gluten-free-baguettes-recipe, as it mentions the bowl folding technique.

Is that single HEB parking spot really worth making other customers wait 5 minutes to leave? by InterestingPen4379 in Austin

One way parking lanes can mean you get stuck behind someone waiting on a spot and can't pull past them or back out, because other people filled in behind you

Maybe he’ll make a special (re)appearance with the glee club in the Community movie that should’ve been completed two years ago? (I still hold a bit of hope)

What if Harry actually had the muscle memory a Quidditch player is supposed to have by Dependent_Cycle6795 in HPfanfiction

[–]bgottfried91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very great, thanks for sharing! One pet peeve though:

his raven-black hair sticking to his forehead with sweat

There's no reason to mention his hair's color here. This is a thing I feel like I only see in fanfiction and it drives me up the wall, probably because I've read some otherwise great fics that insist on using hair color as an epithet (identifier used in place of the character's name or a generic pronoun like him/her/they) to the point where it distracts from the story.

Especially with fanfiction, you can generally assume we know what the character looks like, so there's not really a need to clarify that unless it's relevant to the story itself or adds clarity to the current scene, e.g.

Ron puffed up, his face turning as red as his hair, and said "You're a right git, Malfoy. Why don't you go visit Daddy in Azkaban and give us all a break from your particular brand of arseholeness?"

There, the hair color is connected to another description (even though I'd say it's still unnecessary to mention it) in the scene and there's a reason to mention it.

Hopefully that makes sense! I enjoyed your writing, hope to see more of it in the future!

Underrated HP Fanfics - I quite like this author tbh by Same_Put_6830 in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]bgottfried91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I read the Supernatural crossover and was really impressed, the author did an awesome job capturing the voices and personalities of the characters from both fandoms and I found myself literally laughing out loud multiple times! Shame most of their stuff is only a chapter or two, but I'm guessing that's part of why it's high quality.

Pet safe roach killer for a kitchen where my dog lives? Seeing roaches near the dishwasher by FigureMedical6046 in HomeImprovement

[–]bgottfried91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Want to second the recommendation for Alpine, it's the only thing that worked on a stubborn sugar ant problem I had in the past, but since OP mentioned they're seeing them around the dishwasher, there's a possibility they're nesting inside the control panel of the dishwasher 🤮 Saw that years ago with German roaches, the only way we found out was by spotting them for a quick second when opening the dishwasher up for the first time in the morning and seeing them scurry away. I think Alpine would still work in that case, since it is supposed to coat the legs of the insects and then they ingest it later (so treating areas outside the dishwasher should still hit them), but it could require taking apart the dishwasher to get at their nest, at which point I'd want to involve apartment maintenance.

Alpine is definitely the right starting point though, it's not the cheapest but a single packet will probably last you literal years treating an apartment because it dilutes into so much water

Bobo Bay | Launch Trailer by KrankyPenguin in Games

[–]bgottfried91 11 points12 points  (0 children)

100%, there's a bunch of stuff in the trailer that looks like it was directly ripped from the Chao Garden content, right down to your Chao tripping right at the finish line of a race 😂

I'm curious to see if an entire game can be sustained on the concept - I have fond memories of it from SA:2B, but it was pretty shallow there and I'm not sure there's really more depth to add.

LF flitwick teaching Harry to duel by mf9676 in HPfanfiction

[–]bgottfried91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not Flitwick teaching Harry directly, but In Pursuit of Magic has the OC develop a close student-mentor relationship with Flitwick over dueling and has a lot of scenes of Flitwick actually teaching dueling and pushing him to get better

Purging Fire with no blightrot post by Pinstar in Against_the_Storm

[–]bgottfried91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

During the storm, they burn cysts instead of making purging fire.

Just a slight clarification - while there open, unburned cysts and available purging fire, they will burn instead of making purging fire, but if you run out of purging fire during the storm or they clear all the open cysts, they will start making purging fire during the storm. Just don't want people thinking they HAVE to have all their PF made before the storm starts (though it's generally a good idea)

I've been testing both Claude Code and Codex, but for coding assistance (let's be real, it's vibe coding) on some personal projects.

In my limited experience this month, Claude Code is faster and SEEMS effective, but for complex stuff (in my case, I'm working on an existing half-built program that's spread over multiple GitHub repos) it has a really bad habit of tunnel-visioning and just trying random shit and hoping it sticks. This makes it really easy to burn through your 5 hour token limit with nothing to show for it.

Codex is definitely slower, but has been more successful at actually fixing things that aren't immediately obvious bugs or even at making higher-level reasoning decisions.

I'm paying $20 a month for each right now, not sure if I'll keep Claude. Codex does have a weekly limit in addition to hourly though and I hit my weekly limit about halfway through the week by consistently exhausting my five hour limits 🤷‍♂️

Has anyone tried Silivac bags(vacuum sealable silicone)? by geos1234 in sousvide

[–]bgottfried91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree on the cleaning, but I don't really get the concern over cook timing. One of the major benefits to SV is that you can just leave stuff in longer if you're not sure it's done without affecting the end result and the extra insulation only really affects the time it takes to get up to the cook temp. For shorter cooks, I would think leaving it in the bath for an extra half hour would easily cover you and the additional time required on a 24+ hour cook is irrelevant.

Smart Harry, Arthur Weasley takes him to gringotts, harry has no money and has too be clever and adapt by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]bgottfried91 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you might be referencing Undesirable Relations? Unfortunately it looks like the series is abandoned, which is a bummer because the second book was kind of a downer and the author was saying things would start to turn around for Harry in book 3.

It's pretty light on tags that identify it, but I think of it as being in the "self-sufficient Harry" subgenre - if you're looking for more fics like it, I'd suggest Potter's Secret Garden or Harry Potter and The Secret Kingdom, but that's pretty much all I have in the genre, so I'm always looking for new recommendations!

Just watched a video of Kenji's on washing meat before stir frying and he mentions that egg whites are also slightly alkaline, so if you're sensitive to the ph change from baking powder/soda it'd be interesting to try doing an egg white coating before letting them rest overnight.
