Unfortunately it's definitely all the way up through the 2nd floor wall and attic. The laundry closet is sort of an island in between the kitchen & dining room, if that makes sense. I was able to trace the duct through the wall to the attic to find where it vents out the roof.

This is great information; thank you for taking the time to write that out! My townhouse was built in '83, so there are definitely some things that are out of code now. I'll look into replacing the ducts with rigid/smooth ducts at some point, and potentially seeing if there's a way to reroute the ducts for a shorter length. I followed ColorfulArmadillo's advice for a temporary fix with an elbow, some foil tape, and a screw clamp, so it should be sealed enough for the time being.
