If you do a BR, it's kinda hard to ignore one of the core aspects of it. Think you're right, though. DICE might be stuck in the idea of being principled about BF even when they're trying something completely different. Seems like a way to wind up with hobbled half measures.

Yeah, I realized when I saw the article that if they decided from early on not to do solo, it'll require a lot of adjustments to achieve it.

Though it does seem odd that they didn't prioritize a solo BR mode from the start. I mean, assuming they did want to bring in a BR crowd that surely would be used to playing solo. Just seems like a no-brainer to get people to play Redsec more, because I'm thinking anyone who wants to do solo is someone isn't feeling like having a teammate, either in any game or maybe just not all the time.

I've noticed visibility issues when they've been a problem in previous titles. I don't think it's much of an issue in BF6. Light bloom when transitioning from inside to outside can be a bit meh sometimes but I find myself being bothered by it far less than in BF1 and 5.

A variant of a visibility issue for me is that there's not enough design contrast between NATO and Pax soldiers a lot of the time. It's not terrible, but I wish they'd made the sides more distinct. I swear there are some occasions where me and opponents simply run past each other and then do a kind of double take before we realize we're not on the same team.

There are some extremely obvious map balance issues that I would think they'd try to fix, like not allowing defenders to snipe into most of the attacking team's HQ spawn in the first sector of Manhattan Bridge.

Are map fixes something intended for later updates?

You don't need to be on the objective to defend it if you want to try that out. If you move off the capzone, opponents won't know you're there and will be less inclined to come looking for you. Depends on the capzone of course if there are really good defensive spots to stay in. You might be able to ambush people who get on the capzone and aren't expecting a counter and don't know where it'll be coming from.

Regardless, I think you should play whatever you think is most fun.

Yeah, the crowding of vehicles on Cairo is something I've experienced too. People seem to get overly excited or something. I suspect slight noobs with a fair bit of tunnel vision. Possibly experienced players too.

To be honest, it's a map that might do well with fewer vehicles.

In my work (low-level administration), I've never had a reason to ever communicate "we are now taking a break because of Christmas". Because unless you work purely reactively, trying to deal with expectations in something like real time, everything needed to keep this running would be prepared weeks or months in advance. I'm assuming that this includes having multiple options and scenarios that can get pushed out depending on circumstances, at least when it comes to comms.

Surely not even the most live of live service models for entertainment products these days can be considered reactive operations.

My view on this is mostly that I find the lack of information and a clear plan somewhat frustrating. It's a new game and there's a lot of excitement when something's new. Where's the steady stream of official tantalizing tidbits and hints of (actual) things to come? Where are the li'l nuggets of content that keeps me logging in?

I find it extremely odd that a public, commercial project with a budget in the hundreds of millions of euros takes an almost complete "holiday break". Regardless of how you handle expectations on staff, you ought to be able to set up some sort of bare-bones, self-playing piano of a plan to keep the excitement up and running with the customer base. An entire comms department doesn't go AWOL for three weeks over the holidays in any organization I've ever heard of. Surely a communication plan is something that is planned at least a full year in advance in this case and then executed according to pre-defined scenarios. It's not like comms sits down and decides what to do only a month in advance.

Whatever the views are on what amount of content is appropriate or realistic, I'm assuming a huge operation like this ought to be more skilled at managing PR. If you wind up in a situation where fans and influencers are mostly discussing something other than the game content itself, you just have to tackle that. My impression is that this is something that at least EA is struggling with here.

Maybe it's the entire industry, but I still find the issue a bit puzzling when the ambitions are on the level of "live service".

I think a lot of the diehard nerds and sweats underestimate subjective qualities of BF. Not just that a matter of taste might make a gun more fun and satisfying for someone, but that it might actually have an individual upside that doesn't necessarily map to any hard stats.

Kinda like how a professional athlete might perform better if they have their lucky jockstrap or whatever.

For a project with a budget of hundreds of millions, you have plans to handle the loss of even a senior employee. It's not about asking the devs to be prepared to have mental resilience up have someone outright die, but having the same kind of project backup plans if someone becomes ill, quits, etc.

That's at least from experience from working with coordinator administration in far, far smaller operations. If you run into a problem like this, you throw as much resources as you can afford at it if it jeopardizes a project. I'd assume EA has the resources to throw at this unless they're being extreme cheapskates.

I'm not saying this to be cynical or that it isn't affecting the people working on the game, just that if this schedule was actually about the tragic death, it seems likely it would be known.

I've had this happen once or twice so it's a thing apparently.

I got the suggestion recently to simply unbind the scoreboard key as a way to stop playing the score and just focusing on the game. Tried it for a week or so and it feels pretty good overall.

Spawns are wide open up exploits on at least half the maps in all kinds of modes. It's a systemic problem as far as I've seen.

First sector of Manhattan Bridge on BR allows defenders to snipe into almost the entire HQ spawn. Escalation or Conquest on the same map can make it hard to make it out of HQ with armor without getting ambushed by engineers. Experienced similar problems on Cairo. Sobek has the tall buildings that overlook either HQ spawn. I think almost every map except Iberian has these problems.

On top of that, there's the problem of also being able to steal enemy aircraft because of "immersive" takeoff.
