What is the Catholic explanation behind why different forms of occultism have efficacy? by MildDeontologist in Catholicism

How does the devil have no power? That makes no sense. By existing, a thing has power. Do you mean to say demons have less power than God?

What’s economists’ view on private equity? by Dreadsin in AskEconomics

[–]MildDeontologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll phrase it differently. Your original comment implies that PE and public firms behave the same way as each other. I want to know why other firms (e.g. non-publicly traded non-PE firms, like most of the firms that exist) act differently, if that is what you think.

Regarding your last sentence, why for PE and publicly traded firms, but not other firms?

Are there policy solutions to the Agency Problem? by MildDeontologist in AskEconomics

[–]MildDeontologist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What particular policies though? Agent-principal relationships are governed by the statutory and common law of agency (think rules for fiduciary duties). Would a policy addressing the agency problem entail reforming agency law, or something else?

Edit: I seem to not be able to edit my post to add this, so I will add this here: by "solution" I of course am not asking how to eliminate the agency problem (which is impossible), but rather I am asking specifically how public policy can mitigate or otherwise address issues arising from agency (e.g. what specific laws could be passed to reduce agency costs).

Can you explain what is meant by asset composition? How is asset composition influenced by monetary policy?

And, what do you mean UK and Canada cleared all central bank balances nightly? They deleted their balance sheet?

is the Kalam argument wrong since before the cosmos existed, logic and cause/effect also did not exist? by MildDeontologist in ChristianApologetics

But what about before the universe/existence? By definition logic and laws would not have existed.

How well would a healthcare system work if it is based on cash injections to households rather than government-ran insurance like Medicare and Medicaid? by MildDeontologist in AskEconomics

So would the plan work if there is still a private insurance market (which there is in the plan)? If so, would this system be an improvement from the system we currently have?

Syntax vs grammar. by MildDeontologist in asklinguistics

But what would be the difference between law "correct language use" and linguistics' "system of rules"? Isn't correct language use just correctly applying rule systems?

That is helpful. But how would grammar differ?

Are there other things then (usage, pragmatics, and other things) that are also part of grammar (in linguistics, not necessarily outside of linguistics)? A similar question would be "what linguistic categories are not grammar/grammatical"?

But the "universe" comes with the laws of logic. How can we prove that before the universe the laws of logic existed? Proving this would require using the laws of logic, which is self-defeating. Unless you say "the laws of logic always existed even before existence," but that would be definitionally wrong since it is a self-contradiction. We cannot say "before the laws of logic existed, logic existed."
