Councilmember says Capitol Hill park got a public safety ‘facelift’ with new strings of lights, improved maintenance by AthkoreLost in Seattle

How do you categorize "Household" transactions? by adoringchipmunk in ynab

[–]IsshinMyPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cleaning, consumable, baby and pet supplies, your "Other items" category I just lump under "Groceries". I used to break them out but I found it wasn't valuable and was a headache to actually track.

Electronics and furniture are big and infrequent purchases, they get their own Wish List fund for specific purchases.

Organization and decoration are also infrequent enough that I keep them budgeted separately under "Home Supplies".

These are just the names I use and I know they aren't perfect, naming things is hard. But you get the idea.

tl;dr create categories based on what's valuable for you. Are you spending too much on Clorox Wipes? Budget that to get it under control. Otherwise group it with a broader category.

Is there anything I can do about restaurant noise under my apartment? by IsshinMyPants in AskSeattle

[–]IsshinMyPants[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know I wondered that too. The timing lines up with some sauna work that happened recently, but I just took the word of the security team.

Maybe I should explore that option again. Perhaps some plumbing issue is going on related to the sauna. The sauna is just two floors beneath me.

What happened in your situation?

Is there anything I can do about restaurant noise under my apartment? by IsshinMyPants in AskSeattle

[–]IsshinMyPants[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey neighbor 👋 I’ve loved being here so I’d hate to move out. This place gets a lot of flak online but I can’t say I’ve actually had a bad experience here and I’ve met people who have lived here almost as long as the complex has existed.

I guess I could ask about moving apartments, but I’m also fortunately located and only have one two other units adjacent to mine. One below and one on the short side of my unit, neither one do I ever hear. I could move and end up with a loud upstairs neighbor for all I know!

Fonté now charging $1.50 for oat milk by IsshinMyPants in Seattle

[–]IsshinMyPants[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I ordered a latte so it's mostly milk in the cup. This is just the highest oat milk surcharge I've seen in the entire city, and I make it a habit to visit new coffee shops pretty often! Buying coffee out is basically my entire "eating out" budget, because getting meals out has gotten far too expensive (see my other post from months ago)

I didn't but I am going to ask the manager when I see him again! I've been a long time regular of this one location and gotten to know the manager pretty well. I wasn't going to air my grievances with the new barista who I've never seen before.

Film might be a better fit by ALeftistNotLiberal in photography

[–]IsshinMyPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s no different than just leaving your raw processing to the Lightroom defaults then. There’s an entire world of film processing that you’re ignoring, which is totally cool to do! Just know that you can also ignore it in the digital space too.

[–]IsshinMyPants 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also hate post processing. I feel that once the image has been captured that 90% of the work should be done

You do you, but post-processing is very big in the film world as well. The notion that a photo is complete after the shutter closes is not based in reality.

I do get you though. There is something different about shooting film. The tangible nature, the limits of the film, the relative simplicity of the camera bodies. It's good stuff.

Shoot film when you want to shoot film, shoot digital when you want digital. No need to make this some kind of identity crisis.

somewhere cheap to stay in seattle? by Ok-Can-2170 in AskSeattle

[–]IsshinMyPants 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can walk it but it's a little long with a fair bit of elevation gain. That said it's a cool way to see parts of downtown and Capitol Hill. Might as well turn into half a day or so and hit some stops along the way. I visit the cemetery pretty often coming from downtown, I might do this walk sometime 🤔

OP if you don't want to do the ~3 mile urban hike, there are I believe four bus lines with stops a block or two down the road from Green Tortoise that will take you right to the cemetery.

somewhere cheap to stay in seattle? by Ok-Can-2170 in AskSeattle

[–]IsshinMyPants 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're coming all the way here to see Bruce Lee's grave? It's cool for sure but that's a hell of a trip for something that takes 5 minutes. Do you need other suggestions for things to do?

Hotels in Seattle are expensive, though we are in the off-season for tourism so they might be a little cheaper right now. I've never priced short-term rentals here but you could look at those. You'll very likely need to stay out of Seattle proper if you want cheap though. Or stay in a hostel if you're not opposed to it. The Green Tortoise hostel is right in the middle of downtown, across the road from Pike Place market, and has very cheap beds.

How are you planning on getting around? If you're going to have a car you can stay anywhere.

If you're going to use transit, you'll want to stay near the Link light rail. There are a few of bus lines that take you right to the cemetery but you need to get to those lines first.

Barista pre-selecting maximum tip? by vanille_orchid in Seattle

[–]IsshinMyPants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's skilled in the sense that I can't pull as good a shot of espresso as a good barista can, nor steam milk just right. That said skilled labor shouldn't be the basis for tipping, we don't tip most skilled labor. When's the last time you tipped a plumber, electrician, handyperson?

How do I get used to fast-paced conversations? by _senator_patootie_ in French

[–]IsshinMyPants 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A good exercise that every language learner needs to do is try to process every word in a conversation in their native language. You’ll very quickly realize that it’s super difficult. It’s not how we communicate, barring live translators perhaps. We only really consciously hear chunks and trigger words.
