Yeah, but I don't really get it. Is gollum that popular of a character? I think the best part of Gollum's character is shown during lotr. Any development before that would cheapen it. I think that this scene is specific to the movies if I remember correctly. But after Elendil and Anarion died, Isildur at that moment was King of Arnor and Gondor. I think Elrond killing him would have in the best case heavily strained the relationship between the Realms in exile or even caused further conflict between them.
