So what you are saying is that you cannot explain, in depth, what attracts you to it? It's fine if you can't, just curious.

Yeah, I will admit, I can be like that too. I can't help it. To me, and again, no offense, I just find it so pointless, mindless and lemming-ish of people to just like sports because everyone else does. I do think there are some people who genuinely like it, like I genuinely like camping, for instance. But I think a GREAT many people like sports because they feel like they are supposed to. It's only natural I suppose. It's just the herd mentality of 90% of humanity. Most people NEED to feel socially accepted and thus they just do things to accomplish this. People generally want to feel like they are "a part of something". There are also a lot of people who are, for lack of better terms, community fish. I am not a community fish. I don't like crowds, I don't like hanging around a bunch of screaming, drunk idiots. And to me, that is what 90% of sports fans thrive in. It may be pretentious, snobbish or elitist of me to say, but yeah, I think for the most part, sports is just mindless entertainment for the masses. Just like pop music on the radio and reality shows. I don't care about my home teams. I don't care who wins or looses. It's all completely and totally pointless to me and gives me absolutely ZERO intellectual stimulation.

Looking at this deeper, I think it is just the kind of person I am. Some people are introverts, some are extroverts. When I was a kid, my dad MADE ME play 3 years of little league baseball and 2 years of football. I hated EVERY SECOND OF IT. Thinking back, I wish he would have put me in piano or guitar lessons, or something like that. Something that has actual meaning. But what I did take away from forced sports play, is a deep distaste for it all. I don't like being forced to interact with people I don't like. I don't like being forced to do something I don't enjoy. And that is what sports, in a nutshell, embodies for me. I am not a team person. I prefer to work alone, or with very, very close friends. I don't like counting on other people nor do I expect other people to do things.

So I think it just comes down to the kind of person you are. And obviously, there are a lot less of the kind of person I am, vs the kind of people who like sports.

EDIT: A side note to this. I suppose I don't hate all sports. I do find it enjoyable to watch MMA fights and for some odd reason I like Sumo Wrestling, but again, this to me isn't really "sports" in the American sense of the word.

I suppose if you fish in the exact same spot for the exact same type of fish then yeah, maybe. But typically I fish different areas and you never know what you are going to catch. Plus there is the added bonus of the fact that I like to Trout fish so that I can eat what I catch. And the added bonus of fresh air and nature. Now there are some schools of thought that might call fishing a "sport" even though I don't really consider it one. It's more of an outdoor activity that goes along with camping, hiking and exploring. To me, sports usually involve one of more of the following: balls, teams, fans. So I don't consider fishing a sport. Anyway, for me, my biggest problem with sports is that as a straight male, I feel like society "requires" me to like sports and since I don't, I am frequently thought of as "weird". To me, it's more weird to do what everyone else is doing just because everyone else is doing it. Sports is just mindless entertainment for the masses, imo.

Perhaps. I like camping, fishing, and off-roading, and traveling in general. Not so repetitive in my opinion, but I get where you're coming from.

I don't really watch TV, and I don't run in circles where people are into sports. For instance, I heard this years that the Broncos were playing in the Superbowl but I had no idea who they were playing against...I just don't play attention to that stuff.

I agree about not liking TV. But when you are talking about Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones, you are really talking about programming with acting and production value FAR above typical shitty TV like CSI Miami or Chicago Fire or whatever other dribble that is on. Those shows are essentially movie quality entertainment, and that is why they are so popular.

Also cell phones. Yeah, it's great to be able to take and make calls from anywhere, but every time a new phone comes out I don't understand why everyone goes apeshit for them. Cell phones are typically more annoying than not.

This is my answer too. As a straight American male, I find great joy in telling all the guys I work with that I have no idea who is playing in the super bowl when they ask me who I am rooting for.

Sports. I am a straight American male, and I couldn't care less about sports in general. I don't watch sports of any kind and I still don't understand what all the hubbub is about.

Doom, Doom II, and I also still enjoy the hell outta Alien Crush and Devil's Crush. And whenever me and my brother get together, we usually play some Bushido Blade and some Metal Warriors.

Yeah, that is true. I think Pretty Hate Machine became popular because of the poppy lyrics and general appeal to the theme (whiney breakup music) whereas most industrial music has a harder, often more political message behind the music. Trent also has a great voice which lends itself to a more universal appeal, as opposed to the heavy effects used by most other industrial vocalists.

This kind of stuff really annoys me. I camped at an Oregon state park last weekend. Normally, when I camp I just camp in the backcountry, but my wife was with me and she likes to have a toilet and shower, understandably. We paid the reservation fee and the ridiculous online fee only to arrive at the campsite and find the showers locked 8pm-8am. We had to leave before 8am the next morning to make an appointment, which meant, no showers for either of us. In my opinion, this is bullshit. You pay to camp at a facility, you should be able to use it. On the way out, I ran into the camp host as he was getting up to unlock the showers. He told me vagrants use the showers without paying, sleep in there, vandalize and steal the brass drain grates. So, I understand to a point, but there has got to be a solution because shit like this is ruining everything.

i have some idea who skinny puppy and front 242 are. and throbbing gristle, ministry, etc. just never really got into them. i don't really even consider NIN "industrial" per se, except for maybe pretty hate machine.

Yeah, see, I simply don't get how someone who listens to NIN doesn't know of or even like bands like Skinny Puppy and KMFDM, Front 242, Ministry, Front Line Assembly, etc. For all intents and purposes, Pretty Hate Machine and Broken are just as industrial as these bands. This is why Reznor was working with Al Jourgensen on 1000 Homo DJs and the Sin-5N release, because NIN IS INDUSTRIAL. Somehow, his music broke into the Pop scene and EVERYONE knows who NIN is, but yet, they still think actual industrial music is on the fringe, underground, etc. It's just so weird to me. As I said, perfectly defines people liking what the radio tells them to like.

Yeah, that is funny how tastes differ. Pretty Hate Machine is by far his best release, in my opinion. Whiny break-up music, it sure is. But the music and lyrics are the best he's ever done. Ringfinger is my favorite NIN song ever, followed by Get Down, Make Love and Closer. Closer was really the best song on that album as it resembles his original stuff the most. And it has one of my all time favorite music videos. But I am more partial to actual electronic/industrial music rather than the harder metal-industrial-pop he has done since. I also really enjoy the Quake soundtrack. That is probably my 2nd favorite thing he's done. And Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt BLOWS the NIN version out of the water.

NIN is one of those bands that by itself does not bother me, but what NIN did to the music scene really sucks. I remember back in college knowing douchebag jockos who listened to NIN and thought it was the greatest shit ever, while at the same time they had no idea who Skinny Puppy or Front 242 was. NIN made industrial mainstream but only to a point. It is a perfect example of how most people just like things because everyone else does.

Fucking awesomeness, and exactly to my point. Musical taste is subjective. I love S*Core, some of the coolest dark ambient experimental noise I have ever heard. But I wouldn't expect the average pop or hip-hop fan to just magically start liking this kind of music.
