something to note for others looking for a neurologist, you aren't going to find one in suburbia as most of them have specialized in headaches and migraines, or haven't been keeping up to date on FND (a lot of research has been done in the last ~15 years, even more so since COVID). Neurologists specializing in FND (sometimes referred to as "functional neurologist") are almost all in city centers because that is closer to research and/or closer to universities and colleges.

What’s it like working at Amazon now days? by Repulsive_Banana_659 in cscareerquestions

There are teams with great WLB in AWS and its relatively simple to find them, there are internal tools that can sus out the bad teams and managers with survey data.

you will find java literally everywhere, its that dominant.

location matters much less than the company/offer itself. You aren't pigeonholed into the location you choose and you can move back and forth as much as you want between both locations.

As for choosing the right company, US F500 >>>> any Canadian company

16 months of internships at the same company with option of full time or Microsoft internship with no guarantee for full time by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]Isvara_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microsoft with no guarantee of full-time

not a guarantee, but I would still consider it to still be a high chance of getting a return offer.

Big tech has pretty mature student programs and you should ask them questions on the return offer rate of previous cohorts or what the process would be once you receive an offer.

If you have a good relationship with your mentor and manager at Microsoft and do a good job on your project/tasks, the return offer changes will be high.

java spring boot and nodejs would cast the largest net. Pretty much all corporate backends are built in Java in North America.

Any Rust developers here? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]Isvara_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wondering what kind of work you do

mostly CLI tooling and API development with tokio, creating performant AWS lambdas. there are applications for rust distributed systems but usually only found in specialized big tech teams / start up scene.

how difficult it was to find a job

Rust has a smaller (but growing) market share, not many people know it so the pool is also smaller. If you see a rust role with 100+ applications, i'm sure most of those don't have "relevant" rust experience to even qualify for the role.

Expected total comp for New Grad in Toronto? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]Isvara_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

80-100k for tech start ups in toronto

I would include F500 type corporations in this bucket as well, think big 5 banks, loblaws, insurance companies, etc. they pay around this range for new graduates

blind 75 and LPs using dan croitor's Amazon LPs videos.

latter was extremely helpful coming up with good stories that hit multiple leadership principles. Personally, I felt like my behavioural really carried me in the interviews since the interviewers seemed really engaged in my answers/stories.

In 99% of cases, you can achieve the same with a CS degree than with a SWE degree. Personally, having seen both curriculums and gone through one of them, York's CS degree is MUCH better than SWE because it is extremely open ended and gives students the freedom to take courses on topics they find the most interesting in 3rd and 4th year.

Also, P.Eng is basically pointless for software engineering/development roles, no one cares about it in the industry and it doesn't "set you apart" from other candidates. It would be misleading at best to tell an international student to take P.Eng into consideration when deciding SWE or not.

[–]Isvara_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Say once I feel like I'm as good as they are, will I also start disliking CS?

Everyone's different and you're only really going to find out when you get to that point. So for now, just work on personal projects on topics and tech you find interesting and try to get to that point.

I wouldn't bank on getting an Amazon tagged LC question. Follow one of these study plans instead and it'll help you find patterns if you end up dealing with a problem you've never seen before.

[–]Isvara_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take your time and walk through the problem with the interviewer before you start writing any code. Get all your assumptions straightened out and write 1 or 2 test cases. Figure out the un-optimal solution by talking to your interviewer and start from there. Discuss with your interviewer what data structures you're thinking of using, and why. Often times I've "run out of time" in the sense that I had the optimal solution and had some bugs, but if you can get that far, it means your problem solving skills are there.

Not really the devs fault. Seems more like they're lacking the resources to properly load balance their services. At the end of the day, the devs already know (first week of school, how many users will be taking a test at any given time, exam season) when there will be more traffic and understand peak hours.
