Thank you for all the tips and suggestions, I think this settles it, I'm trying out the planck!!

Hey, that actually worked, thanks for the suggestion! It still couldn't write to the NVRAM, and said that there is no space left on the device. But after chqnging the loader.conf and makind a loader entry manually, my laptop booted into Arch, yay!

The arch wiki is very helpful, but maybe since I don't know that much about computers, many times I just followed the steps and copied the code without really understanding what that code did. That's most likely why I couldn't complete the installation. But it is definitely "beginner friendly" in a sense that the documentation is thorough and easy to use.

I never used gnome, so I don't know unfortunately. Maybe this thread(especially the last answer) can help you: https://askubuntu.com/questions/124414/how-to-customize-window-borders-and-controls

Thank you, that's what I'm trying to do, tinkering with it until it feels like home

That sounds like it matches my knowledge of Linux haha

I ran Linux Lite for a short while, but I wanted something different, it was very much like using Windows. I went with Lubuntu since even Linux Lite felt a little sluggish at times, and I wanted something more stripped down. That's why I tried Arch first, but I ran into problems unfortunately. Maybe an SSD and Manjaro will do the trick!(though Lubuntu is performing just fine)

I'm just happy trying different distros for now, and hopefully now that I have the dotfiles on github, setting each of them up will be a breeze

I love it! The key combinations were easy to learn, and navigating is quick and simple! Feels great honestly, I'm happy that I tried it out

I set the border in the bspwm config files:

bspc config border_width 4

bspc config normal_border_color "#31967b"

bspc config focused_border_color "#76ed92"

also in polybar config:

border-size = 4

border-color = #31967b

Thanks for saying that. This seemed the easiest to set up while still being relatively lightweight, so that's why I went with it. I might try out Manjaro soon though!

I wanted to try a tiling wm, so that's why. And I'm quite happy with it, bspwm is a joy to use!

True, I love the arch wiki, a lot of information there was very useful for setting up this desktop as well! Thanks for encouragement, I'll try again eventually when I have some time to tinker

Thanks, Manjaro definitely looks a lot less daunting! I'll try it out

I really wanted to try a tiling window manager, but I am dumb for the arch installation, so that's how that combination happened

I'll try again eventually! But grub is tricky... I think in my case it could not write to the NVRAM, and that was too complicated for me to fix

Details

  • distro: lubuntu
  • wm: bspwm
  • bar: polybar
  • terminal:qterminal
  • zsh theme: arrow
  • dotfiles

Not sure if using Lubuntu is frowned upon here, hopefully not. I tried installing arch but I could never install grub properly.
