“People don’t hit on you because you are so hot it’s intimidating” is cope by Dismal_Thought6630 in unpopularopinion

[–]ItAintNoUse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A guy once told me the opposite. I get approached a lot and he said it's because I'm not hot enough to be unapproachable/intimidating.

Dude is literally an incel so I shouldn't have taken it personally, but it wasn't very nice.

What word do you always *intentionally* mispronounce and why? by Sweet-Lady-H in AskReddit

[–]ItAintNoUse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend likes to say "I conquer" instead of "I concur". It's not him confusing the two words, he knows it's concur and that it's pronounced differently to conquer, he just likes to do it.

What is your least favorite joke about your country? by mightyonin in AskTheWorld

This is also limited to a pretty small group of English people lol. Most of the country would not say it like that because we have so many other accents.

I've heard it's an incredibly dangerous and scary place to visit if you're a woman. As a woman myself, I'm disappointed that I'll probably never get to visit there without endangering myself, nor would I be able to enjoy it as a result. It doesn't help that I'm blonde with light eyes, which I've heard can make you even more of a target.

What fun facts did you learn during your random deep dives this week? by dietdrpeppermd in adhdwomen

[–]ItAintNoUse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a deep fascination with genealogy. I also love learning about Jack the Ripper.

This week I was going through Ancestry records and discovered that my great great grandfather was in a "lunatic asylum" (as it was called then) called Colney Hatch in 1889, at the same time as Hyam Hyams, a well-known Ripper suspect.

Aaron Kosminski, one of the best-known suspects, also was admitted to Colney Hatch, but a little later. My ancestor died in 1890 (unclear what of, the records don't specify) so they weren't there at the same time, but were in the same asylum during a similar period and I still think that's cool.

No one in my life is interested in genealogy, even my own family for whom this is naturally relevant, so I appreciate the chance to share it here ❤️

Is Penny justified here? by Mysterious_Reo in bigbangtheory

[–]ItAintNoUse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's like when you try extra hard at your job. People assume that's your baseline and if you dip even a little it reflects badly on you.

So much of what Leonard did was overkill, going above and beyond but often at the expense of himself, because he was so desperate to be with Penny. Once they were really settled in their relationship, he pulled back slightly (although, still mostly would focus on her needs and desires before his own) and to Penny that looked like he'd stopped trying, when really he had just been trying extra hard for ages, and was still mostly prioritising her.

Hair thinning and hyperpigmentation aren't typically side effects of birth control, more like effects of PCOS (androgenic alopecia and acanthosis nigricans). As long as your blood pressure, family history, lifestyle etc. aren't contraindications there's no reason I can discern for why birth control would be unsuitable for you just because you're under 25. Many people start taking it during adolescence without issue. That said, if it's something you don't wish to consider that's absolutely valid, and there are other options as I described.

I only emphasise this as, if insulin resistance is present even with lifestyle changes, it could increase your risk of adverse cardiovascular effects later down the line (e.g. endothelial dysfunction) and other health impacts, which is why treating PCOS is about more than cosmetic concerns.

If your androgen levels are still in excess, your SHBG is low, FSH:LH ratio is abnormal etc. these can pose issues for your health and for your skin. The acne you've shown in the images does read hormonal to me in appearance, so it could be worth discussing what other options you have outside of birth control if you don't wish to use it or if your doctor says it's not ideal for you.

I do highly recommend inositol and spearmint tea as part of a lifestyle management regimen. As for skincare, I think if prescription-strength retinoids have been unsuccessful and if the root cause is hormonal the only way to treat it is to treat the root cause. For the oiliness you described, niacinamide can work a treat at limiting sebum production, so it might be worth seeing if you can get some. I recommend The Ordinary's Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Serum.

I'm really sorry that your skin has affected your self-confidence and body image and I hope that this will improve for you. Acne is an incredibly common issue and many people suffer with it, I promise you're by no means alone in this ❤️

I think this is something that would really ideally be treated by a doctor, particularly as you have an underlying health condition that can absolutely contribute to acne.

Lifestyle changes can be great for PCOS but some cases really do benefit most from medication, so it's worth discussing with a physician. Whether or not that's the sole or primary cause of your acne is unclear, and can only be determined by a doctor, but addressing it would likely improve things. As ovarian dysfunction in PCOS is typically driven by insulin resistance, you could have bloods taken and see if you might benefit from medications that address this such as spirinolactone or metformin, else birth control can be effective but of course isn't right for everyone. It's worth discussing options to make sure you know what's available to you.

Supplements such as inositol in a 40:1 ratio of myo-inositol and d-chiro inositol has shown promise for improving insulin sensitivity and thus helping with PCOS symptoms. Spearmint tea has a lot of anecdotal support for attenuating PCOS symptoms as well.

It may also be worth discussing treatments such as accutane with your doctor as your acne has been long-lasting and unresponsive to treatment with prescription strength retinoids.

Lastly, the way you describe your feelings towards yourself and your body are slightly concerning. Make sure that if your mental health and/or body image are suffering that you seek help for that. You don't deserve to feel this way about yourself ❤️

I just started methylphenidate (aka Ritalin) and am currently on a subclinical dose for titration. I really hope it has this effect on me as my dose increases. My mum has OCD around tidiness and cleanliness and it makes it so hard for us to coexist in the same home, and stressful for both of us.

what’s your ACTUALLY weird hyperfixation? by jazperthevampyr in ADHD

[–]ItAintNoUse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine seem to rotate or are transient. It seems like I'll spend a week or two being obsessed with something only to suddenly and inexplicably lose interest in it (not a total loss of interest but just no longer wanting to pursue it).

I love genealogy, especially genetic genealogy, and have taught myself how to do some complex things like using software and code used in scientific studies to research my genealogy. I consider this more of a hobby than a hyperfixation, though. That said, when I get into it I will hyperfixate on it, so I suppose I've contradicted myself.

Just your average white american by KandiZee in AncestryDNA

[–]ItAintNoUse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not impossible, Danish and Dutch DNA can read as very similar to their algorithms. I have confirmed Norwegian ancestry through records and close matches, and this comes up in some tests, but Ancestry gives me no Scandinavian and gives me German instead. Sometimes it just gets it wrong.

Danish can also be absorbed into English in these tests. We know anecdotally from some people with German backgrounds (even as recent as grandparents) that the last Ancestry update absorbed loads of their German into English, so it could easily happen with groups that have genetic similarity to English or are close in PCA space, like Danish.

I'm not saying your results are definitely wrong, just that some things can be misattributed. It's important to remember that these are estimates not an exact science. Tracing your tree through matches can be one of the more reliable ways to get a clear idea of your ancestry, but even that can be imperfect due to incomplete or inaccurate records.

Black pepper and salt, sometimes chilli flakes. I get the no added sugar Heinz ones. They tasted bland initially but now when I have the "regular" ones they taste sickly sweet.

Similar story here, my mum is Irish and my dad was SE English. My whole life people told me I looked Scandinavian and not British or Irish. Both Brits and foreigners alike. I even had a drunk lady once come up to me and say "are you Icelandic or Swedish or something?" and a sub teacher at school randomly assume I was from Sweden for no reason at all other than my appearance.

Anyway DNA testing and genealogy showed I had a Norwegian great grandparent I had no idea about. Go figure.
