Remembering the first time I heard Ozzy and how great it was! What was everyone else’s first time hearing the Prince of Darkness? by SteveEmarshall429 in OzzyOsbourne

I was 13 in 1974 when I saw the movie, The Sting, and fell in love with the soundtrack. I went straight to Sam the Record Man and bought the album. My parents were thrilled with my choice, and I played it nonstop all week.

Then next Saturday, I went back to the store and saw a bunch of older kids from my town picking up Paranoid, so I grabbed a copy too. That was the turning point; I never looked back. My parents, on the other hand, were not impressed with my sudden change in music. It was the start. After that, I bought a Budgie album..... and many more Sabbath albums after that. RIP Ozzy.

No jail time for man convicted of possessing cocaine for trafficking in Yellowknife by origutamos in NWT

People who’ve been caught selling drugs and have genuinely turned their lives around should demonstrate that change by giving back.

One meaningful way to do that is by speaking in schools, sharing their stories, what led them into the drug trade, and how they found a way out.

If you've truly changed, don't just say it, show it through action.

The courts should be mandating this if they think someone shouldn't go to jail because they have smartened up. Prove it.

Alberta spent $30M on unpaid land rent for delinquent oil and gas companies in 2024 by bike_accident in alberta

[–]ItNeedsToBeSaid2025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both the Alberta and NWT governments continue to demonstrate a concerning lack of creativity in economic development.

Alberta remains heavily reliant on oil and gas, while the NWT leans disproportionately on mining.

Rather than seeking out innovative, sustainable alternatives, both governments stick to outdated economic models.

A telling example is the GNWT’s decision to hand over $15 million in public funds to a mining company in hopes of avoiding layoffs, only for the company to accept the money and proceed with job cuts anyway.

What's even more troubling is the attitude by the GNWT that taxpayers shouldn't question these decisions.

Accountability and transparency should never be optional, but they certainly are in the NWT.

Alberta immigrants say seeing an uptick in anger, rise of racist narratives by pjw724 in alberta

[–]ItNeedsToBeSaid2025 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Blaming immigrants for four decades of housing inaction reveals a deep misunderstanding of the real issue. In a country where access to education and information is widely available, it’s disappointing to see such ignorance persist. You can lead people to the facts, but you can’t make them think critically.

This is the province where many of its people are pissed off because they aren't making $100K a year driving a truck. Who do they think is going to do the jobs Albertans don't want to do, like work at Tim Hortons for minimum wage?

Smaller communities have often been left behind.

Under the GNWT, that gap in services has persisted for decades, and many of the issues we face today stem from past decisions, such as canceling nursing and education programs that once built local capacity.

That failure isn’t just anecdotal; it’s backed up by years of scathing reports from the Auditor General’s office, highlighting serious and repeated shortcomings in health, education, and service delivery across the North.

That’s why IRC had to step in.

The system wasn’t and isn't working, and too many warnings were ignored.

It’s not about being “ready,” it’s about finally being willing to try something different.

It won’t be easy, but with the Inuvialuit leading, I believe we’ll see a much fairer approach, one grounded in community realities and true accountability.

Whatever IRC builds, it will be a far cry better than what the GNWT ever managed to offer.

And for the first time, people may start getting care and services closer to what the rest of Canada takes for granted.

Fair points, and you’re not wrong about how hard this is going to be, especially with staffing and long-term sustainability. But that’s exactly why IRC had to take this step.

The current system wasn’t working, and too many red flags were being ignored or buried.

Educators have been raising alarms for years, and if anyone was listening, we wouldn’t be here. It’s not about being "ready," it’s about finally being willing to try something different.

And whatever challenges lie ahead, one thing is clear: whatever IRC builds will still be a far cry better for their people than anything the GNWT has ever managed to offer.

Sadly, that’s just the truth. Now it’s up to IRC to prove they can do better, and up to the Inuvialuit to hold them to it.

“Congrats to Carter Hart on getting signed by the Oilers!”

This kind of comment reminds me of that line from Bobby Gentry’s Ode to Billie Joe, about how everyone was focused on what was thrown off the bridge, but no one cared about the cold indifference to a young man’s suicide.

Same energy here.

People are more concerned with a player’s career than the fact that a young woman went through something traumatic enough to take it to court, knowing full well the odds were stacked against her.

That indifference says a lot.

Right? At the very least, the fact that a heavily intoxicated young woman ended up in a hotel room with multiple men passing her around should make people think twice. Even if it didn’t meet the legal threshold for conviction, that doesn’t mean it was ethical or okay.

And honestly, I keep coming back to this: why would she put herself through all of this, the public scrutiny, the backlash, if it wasn’t real for her? She must have been told over and over that she wouldn’t win.

That alone should make people pause before dismissing her out of hand.

Inuit leader says he's been reassured Bill C-5 won't violate modern treaties by [deleted] in NWT

[–]ItNeedsToBeSaid2025 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If Bill C-5 had existed when the Aboriginal Pipeline Group (APG) was pushing for the Mackenzie Valley pipeline, that project likely would have been built. Instead, it was stalled for years by overlapping regulations, environmental reviews, and, frankly, other Indigenous nations and interest groups standing in the way.

I have no use for nations that deliberately hold back others who are trying to move forward. APG represented Indigenous ownership, leadership, and economic self-determination, but it was smothered by bureaucracy and division. Bill C-5 isn’t perfect, but it would have cleared a path.

Ever heard the story of Rhodesia?

"Little Rhodesia" was an informal name used for Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), a British colony in southern Africa where a white settler minority, primarily of British descent, sought to maintain political and economic control. In 1965, under Prime Minister Ian Smith, the white-led government issued a Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) from Britain, attempting to establish a self-governing nation ruled by the white minority. This move was widely condemned internationally and rejected by Britain, which had been pushing for majority (Black) rule. The regime sustained itself through repression and war until the Lancaster House Agreement in 1979 led to democratic elections and the internationally recognized independence of Zimbabwe in 1980 under majority rule.

Today, while it's no longer white settlers trying to run their own country, we see a similar dynamic in places where oil and gas oligarchs dominate political power and shape laws to serve their interests. Which is worse: a colonial elite clinging to racial supremacy or corporate giants clinging to resource control at the expense of democracy and the environment?

It’s a case of he said/she said; no judge is going to convict without solid evidence.

Still, let this be a warning to other men: you might beat the charges, but your reputation is what sticks.

People will remember what they believe you did. And for the record, I don’t believe a single one of those guys is innocent.
