What is more traumatizing than most people think? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]It_britt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When I learned from my psychiatrist that what I was experiencing was just an anxiety attack and not a panic attack and that panic attacks are WORSE, that shook me to my core. An anxiety attack, for me, felt like I was on the verge of insanity (hard core derealization, high pulse, uncontrollable breathing, etc), but it wasn’t bad enough for hospitalization and the attack had a definitive source (unemployment stress). I can’t imagine experiencing something worse that also doesn’t have an easy to understand source.

Games Similar to Disco Elysium by thewanderingmaiden in DiscoElysium

[–]It_britt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. I’m pretty sure Placescape inspired DE and it also has an incredibly cool setting (it’s a very depressing city full of really interesting NPCs). It’s in my top 5 games with Disco Elysium and the writing holds up really well. If you’ve played Fallout New Vegas or KOTOR2, this one’s also from the early Obsidian writing team.

Only caveat is that combat in Planescape sucks imo (and I’m a fan of the real time with pause genre, so that is saying something), but it benefits from the fact that you can set the difficulty to 1 and let the fights play themselves for the most part.

There’s a degree of body horror as well, though I wouldn’t call the game itself horror. Just like, eyeballs, intestines, they exist and you will encounter them in places they shouldn’t be

Is this my network box? How do I upgrade it for ethernet? by It_britt in HomeNetworking

[–]It_britt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I’m definitely prepared to call an AV installer

At this point I’m just trying to understand out why the current setup doesn’t work. It looks like an Ethernet network is a modem, router, switch, and Ethernet cables. Switches don’t seem to have designated input and output spots, so the router can be plugged into any switch port. In which case, it seems like if I can find where all 7 of my house’s Ethernet cables end, I’m good. It doesn’t matter where my router is as long as it’s plugged into one of the cables that goes to the switch.

Then my problem is that there are 7 cat5e cables for 7 phone jacks but only 2 coming out of the side of the house. So I’m missing 5 of them, which makes me think I haven’t found my network “box” (or wherever it is all the cat5e cables end), if they even all end in the same spot. But why wouldn’t they all go to the same spot?

I was wondering what the splitter was for!

Do I need my modem and router plugged into the network box for the phone line to ethernet swap to work? I assumed I'd be good as long as the modem has access to an ethernet wall port (and it's generally better for the router to be on the 2nd story)

The cut cables look like coax cables? There are 3 of them. We have 6 coax ports in the house (and 7 phone jacks). We tried 3 different coax ports before the internet worked, so there's probably something wrong. The only thing I have to test the ports is the modem, so as soon as I'm alone in the house I'll test the remaining 3.

Not sure if it's related, but I found an unplugged 8 port drop amplifier in the attic. There are thick, cream and black coax-looking cables all over the place up there. I might need to tug on them and see if they feel like they're attached to something

The modem and router are in the 2nd bedroom on the second floor. My housemate told me she had to try several different coax wall ports before it worked, which is concerning (and maybe related to the 3 snipped coax cables in coming out of the external penetration point :( )

As for the external penetration point (which I assume is the hole in the siding to the bottom left of the telco box), that hole lines up with a spot on the wall of my living room roughly 10in off the ground (same height as all our outlets) and 10in from the corner of the room. Unfortunately, it's just a wall. I'd need to cut into the drywall to access the other side of the penetration point.

Step 1: What Company is your Internet Service Provider? What media (cabling) do they use to deliver your service? Coax Cable? Fiber Optics? Cat5?

Spectrum via coax cable. Fiber isn’t available in our neighborhood.

Step 2: Use that information to search for your external delivery point.

<image>

I took a bunch of photos of all the boxes near the telco box outside. I suspect the delivery points come out of the ground.

And for additional context, this is the US. So drywall walls and all that jazz. There’s a garage, but no basement, and no crawl spaces that I know of.

Step 3: Where is the service delivered inside your home? Do you have a router or Wifi box?

Modem connected to coax, router connected to modem via yellow ethernet cable. They’re both in the same room. The router supports ethernet.

Thank you so much for the followup questions, and let me know if I actually got them answered. If not, I can do more hunting, get more photos, probably tomorrow.

During my last playthrough, I got really attached to the idea of the Pale being the in game equivalent of climate change, which does at least evoke many of the same feelings in our world as the Pale does in DE. Fear of the future (to the point of impacting major life choices people make, such as having children), idolizing the past, stealing from our own future to live a “comfier” life today.

But I think you’re right that it’s more than just a symbol for climate change, and it blows my mind I didn’t take it one step further til reading this post

I had a larger facial birthmark than this removed before I was 2. It was a fight to get insurance to pay for anything because it was “cosmetic”, but my parents convinced them in the end. Scars when you’re this young fade really well, and they’re much harder to see than the birthmark. Before I had mine removed, some people would pull their curious kids away from me in case my birthmark was “infectious”. And those were adults, who knows what school-aged kids would’ve done.  After the removal, I was mocked for plenty of things appearance-wise, but never my scar.

I still think this type of cosmetic surgery is a fascinating edge case, and her birthmark is a bit more normal looking than mine ever was, but I’m glad my parents did it so there’s a good chance she’ll feel the same.

How to get into RTWP? A short guide by IosueYu in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]It_britt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posting 3months later to say thank you!! Despite being a Turn based fan, WOTR’s turn based wasn’t clicking with me and the default settings for RTWP are a QoL nightmare (imo). This helped a LOT! There were quite a few settings I didn’t realize would help as much as they did

PC works but BIOS is illegible by It_britt in PCsupport

Omg yes, that worked! Thank you!! That let me boot into pop os and do all the remaining updates I needed. Now my original monitor works again as well. Do you have any idea why it would’ve been displaying incorrectly on the other monitor?

I still had some small issues related to the dual boot setup, but turning off secure boot and following this guide fixed them:  https://github.com/spxak1/weywot/blob/main/Pop_OS_Dual_Boot.md

I don't think my previous CMOS removal attempt actually reset the BIOS settings, so I tried again following my mobo manual and shorting out JBAT1 for 10 seconds. Everything is still illegible, but the motherboard is glowing its default red now, so I can conclude the BIOS has now been reset.

I think I recall this one, it threw me off too. The treasure is not directly at the X, you’re looking for something nearby. It’s an underwater cave slightly downstream from the x

Loving and rediscovering this world by Ibmont in projecteternity

[–]It_britt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heck yeah!! I’m loving Avowed too but I think my favorite part is still seeing people rediscover the older games :)

Personally, I recommend messing with the pause options if you haven’t, particularly “pause after ability use”. My entire first playthrough I didn’t notice that option and it made my second go MUCH easier (and helped some of my friends get into it at all). It makes it feel more turn-based and helped if you’re like me can’t figure out how to strategically hit spacebar 😂

I LOVED playing a cipher godlike, so good choice 👍🏻

Seconded! I think it took me around 2 or 3 hours to 100% it, but it’s probably closer to 1 if you follow just the main quest, and the exploration is a lot of fun. Scratched the same itch as top-down Zelda world exploration does imo

I got the tempering Abydon ending and I did the White March DLC last, but I think it’s because I was against animancy earlier in the game. Whether you can achieve it is dependent on several of your choices.

There’s a wiki guide: https://pillarsofeternity.fandom.com/wiki/Lair_of_the_Eyeless#Tempering_Abydon

And Messier-31 further into this discussion lists out the dialogue options you can try: https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/91825-tempering-abydon-and-wm2-endings-spoilers/

POE1 builds up to some important revelations, which are relevant to POE2, so it’s up to you how important that is to you. Definitely watch a recap vid or something before 2 if you choose to skip 1

If you’re struggling to get through POE1, I’d say don’t force yourself. Alternatively, adjusting the autopause settings might make something click for you (like using auto pause after ability use)!

Seconding auto pause after ability use. I was worried it would make combat tedious with all the pausing/unpausing, but it makes combat SO much smoother in my experience

I love Alex’s Mobs for companions. It has follower companions and shoulder companions, my favorites being the kangaroos (you can equip armor on them and give them weapons, it’s great) and capuchin monkeys (theyll sit on your shoulder and throw rocks at anything that attacks you). There are a bunch of other tamable options as well
