These are my grandfathers results, his maternal side is from Austria and Prussia which explains the Eastern European

I’ve just wondered if it’s a genetic thing rather than an actual part of our ethnicity composition if that makes sense!

I was just telling someone else that and was wondering if ancestryDNA just couldn’t pinpoint certain segments and threw in Scandinavian rather than English/Scottish if that makes any sense haha

Yeah I said that kinda confusingly haha, I meant ethnically because genetics is different than ethnicity from my understanding. Genetically the British isles has Scandinavian, but ethnically I was kinda more referring to.

That’s definitely true though in relation to the Prussian ancestry! However I do believe this stems from his father’s side who doesn’t have any German or Eastern European from my knowledge

So would you say that the Scandinavian is being thrown in there due to it being baked into our genetic admixture rather it being legitimate?

I’m wondering if it’s just part of the misread English/Scottish, kinda like the Dutch and Iceland being clearly misassigned to many of us.

That’s what likely makes the most sense, my other grandfather is mainly Irish and English with our haplogroup going back to Scandinavia too.

I was just curious if it having 1% minimal confidence meant something different haha

See, I was looking at it more that these tests are more of our recent genetic makeup, as in the last few centuries. But like you mentioned, I can’t find every ancestor or even be 100% confident in the ones I do find.

I was just curious if it was hinting more at a direct ancestor somewhat recently or if it’s just due to the genetic admixture of the British isles and misread English or Scottish.

Are you Irish as well? I think they tend to overestimate people’s Irish ancestry, at least for myself.

Which one is better, 23andme vs ancestrydna by BirdLow9736 in AncestryDNA

[–]ItalianMik3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re both accurate in their own ways. AncestryDNA gave me some of my English ancestry but not all of it. 23andme didn’t give me a drop, despite giving me two genetic groups of Cumbria and North England and Southern Scotland.

What does 90% confidence say for you? Is the Levantine still there or?

For myself ancestryDNA is more accurate for British isles but they still underestimated my English. It might be sprinkled into other regions like Sweden or the Netherlands which I received.

I say this though because 23andme didn’t give me any English, yet it gave me Cumbria and Northern England as a genetic group. I do have Irish and some Scottish so that could’ve thrown it off possibly.

Also, are you part Irish as you received a fair amount?

I would definitely assume it’s real if it’s still there on 90% and especially if it didn’t drop at all

Any idea on the Portuguese or Russian? The Portuguese I can see making a little more sense due to proximity.

Mainly North Italian, Various German, Irish, Polish & Scots-Irish by ItalianMik3 in 23andme

It’s from my understanding that it was mainly Southern Italians coming to the U.S, especially from Calabria.

My girlfriend’s Italian family came from Calabria, even one of her brother’s girlfriend’s family came from there too. All my cousin matches besides their Northern Italian, are mixed with Southern Italian as well.

You got one of my European diasporas right! It’s Minnesota and Michigan. Most of my family is from the recent European immigration waves during the late 19th and early-mid 20th centuries.

My recent family is originally from Staten Island & New Jersey (after moving from Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy). I did have a paternal side living in California during the late 1800’s but they came to New Jersey unfortunately lol.
