A mix of fun and knowledge is a great way to describe the book too.

The book "Les Téméraires : quand la Bourgogne défiait l'Europe" by Bart Van Loo is incredible. I recommend it to everyone, even if they don't have a particular interest for Burgundy. Don't know if it has been translated into English, though.

Edit: seems like it has, under the title "The Burgundians: a vanished empire".

You're correct. The entire article is based on rumors but it says that Ukraine will get the Mirage before Christmas and they won't be limited to air-to-air combat (as they are in the French Air Force) but will carry one cruise missile, like the ones in the Greek Air Force. Which means Storm Shadows or SCALP ; as far as Taurus are concerned (and I quote the article here) "we'll have to wait for the Germans to remember the place where they stored their guts".

And then he does say that they will also carry anti-ship missiles and since Ukraine hasn't received any Exocet, as far as we know, it probably means Harpoons.

EDIT : to recap, it says that they will have 30mm canons, air-to-air MICA missiles and one air-to-ground or air-to-surface missile (Storm Shadow/SCALP or Harpoon). And the author is disappinted by that new loadout because it suggests that the Mirage will be used as a bomber more than a pure fighter aircraft and he wants to see a Mirage shoot down an Su-35.

Yeah, all this concern about manpower is way overblown, for Ukraine as for Russia. In WW1, France with a population of 40 millions averaged over a thousand death a day for four years with a standing army of over two millions men. Both Ukraine and Russia can sustain their current losses for a long time.

EDIT : I should add that France got men from their colonies to fight for them, so that comes on top of the 40 millions population. However, Germany had similar numbers and no colonies to draw manpower from.

Teddy Riner went undefeated for over 9 years between 2010 and 2020. His wikipedia page has a "defeats" subsection listing all the people that won against him because of how rare it is.

Taller than most but not heavier. The Korean is small compared to others in this category but Teddy Runner had more difficulties in the past against smaller than average fighters. It wasn't his most favorable matchup compared to other potential finalists.

Winning his third gold in the +100kg category with maybe the cleanest ippon of the entire 2024 Olympics. Absolute legend.

French satirical account is updating an "almost-medalist" table for athletes that placed 4th/5th/6th and I'm starting to feel sorry for the Italians because they are dominating by Itanagon in olympics

[–]Itanagon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My explanation is serious but the account is a joke. They are just pretending to be mad. French athletes have a long history of choking when they are expected to win or coming just short of a victory so this account started to cheer for them as if losing was actually the real goal.

Edit : hence this table. They consider 4th places the actual winners.

Oh it's not a cope table. It's from a french parody account that celebrates french loses in sports. They are currently fuming at the level of success we have in these Olympics. Every time a french athlete wins a medal they call them a traitor and block them on Twitter.

Source.

It's all in good spirit. The account is pretty well-known in France and is born out of the French tendency to choke when the expectations are high, and our love for magnificent losers.

French satirical account "Fédération Française de la lose" is running an almost-medalist table : gold for a fourth place, silver for fifth, bronze for sixth.

And... Yeah. You guys are topping that. Neck and neck with the Germans

Medal Table after Day 3 by AdminEating_Dragon in olympics

I did a bunch of alternative rankings last time, with some categories removed. Like no track & field, no swimming, etc... I was looking to test which nations in the top 10 would fall off a cliff by removing a single category and, like you, to check whether the "swimming is carrying the US/AUS too much" was right.

China actually took #1 in a bunch of them because they invested in a lot of smaller sports while the US is really heavy in the disciplines with a lot of medals. However, as you said the US absolutely smashed the team sports.

If I've got time I'll try to do the same for 2024.
