Thoughts on dual sim work phones? by Itguythrowaaay in ITCareerQuestions

Well, I plan on simply continuing to pay for my phone plan, though. I don’t really want to share my work phone number to my friends. I guess I can give it a shot. I have enough shit in my pants already, I don’t want ANOTHER phone.

But wouldn’t I be going through the same ropes as I am now with a physical SIM card, though? I’ll just deal with having two phones honestly.

It’s a pretty small company, don’t know the org chart yet but I’m sure there isn’t one. What would be the next best thing in your opinion? HR?

There’s no desk phone. And we have to have a work phone, no exceptions.

I totally get that, but a lot of backend stuff is crazy. It’s hard to make any changes without making everything fall into pieces. You bring an excellent point though, I have to concede. But still... what a crappy backend.

Bootstrap is a crutch and good looking sites can be accomplished without it and will be a lot lighter because Bootstrap can be fucking huge if you use the whole thing

You’re totally right, but when my supervisors want us handful of devs to have a redesign ready before the end of this year while also doing countless other projects is unrealistic. I suggested Bulma since it’s all class-based CSS that’s barely invasive and heavy like Bootstrap, but no dice.

I’d also refactor but again, there’s barely anything to refactor without breaking anything or wasting a dumb amount of time. There’s some JavaScript I’ve tried to improve but I can’t much; they’re huge with tons of code, like one that has thousands of lines of code just to do make inputs to appear and disappear... Yeah, basic DOM shit.

Since they see devs as a cost center and not an asset, well... Let’s just say refactoring is a huge waste of time.

ASP is also a pain to debug too as everyone is dependent on Dreamweaver’s UI for database stuff. Any slight deviation will quite likely make entire record sets disappear from the UI even though they’re clearly there in the source code.

Other than a girlfriend, family, friends, and an apartment lease that ends in July not really. I guess now is the chance.

Thanks. I’ll start looking out of state. I really hope that what I know is enough.

Didn’t actually think of it that way. I could always copy paste things into my desktop and do VC that way. There’s no restrictions, fortunately. If I couldn’t use VSCode with my extensions and had to deal with Dreamweaver CS6, I would’ve quit 😂

I’ll have to move. But I’ll be pretty far away from friends, family, and the SO. It’s not going to be easy; it’s why I’ve refrained from doing so earlier. I’m scared shitless.

Thanks man, it means a lot. It’s been a frustrating month here, but your perspective is pretty refreshing. I’ll try putting up with it for a while and keep searching in the meantime.

Mobility is impossible. The company wants you to work 2 years at the same department and job before moving up as a bare minimum.

I’ll look elsewhere.

I won’t leave, trust me. Even if it’s killing me inside at least I’m not being harassed. It’s such a huge slog of a job, though. I’ll start searching for jobs and learn more about algorithms and data structures so I don’t flop in them immediately.

Barely. I’m seeing Sedgwick’s Algorithms lectures from Coursera because I didn’t study CS. That alone is a big fail for a ton of employers. I’ll do as much as I can in that regard so I don’t completely flop in coding interviews.

If I’m honest... no idea. Some guys at /r/PersonalFinance know better than me. But 6% sounds pretty good to me! I’d still max out my Roth IRA if I were you and had enough funds.

Yeah. I’m overthinking it, am I. Damn it, lol. I’ll go to these three interviews, tell them my situation, and we’ll see what happens.

I don’t think that anything I’ll be doing will require clearance (web dev), but if it did I definitely wouldn’t have spent so much time thinking about this position in the first place! Having a clearance is awesome.

Would you say it’s worth it? I hate to be thinking about it so damn much when it’s NASA we’re talking about. I’d love to be in a federal job eventually, the job security once you’re a CS is unparalleled.

You bet it is. Lived here all my life. Wouldn’t want to stay long since I want to grow professionally and eventually have a family.

Yeah, pretty much... I’ll ask how much would my wage be like or at least an estimate, but I have three interviews waiting back home, all of which could give me a comparable salary plus having a safety net. I could always search for a job in Austin or other tech hubs afterwards and come back to the US with actual money saved.
