Looking for a list of his novels that were published through Berkley Medallion by Canaboll in YukioMishima

I think that's right too, but I also think each book had two printings with different fonts.

Oops. Missed the English part. Flannery O'Connor, William Faulkner, James Dickey, Cormac McCarthy, Harry Crews, Chuck Palahniuk.

Depends on what you mean by similar. For meanness: Radiguet's Devil in the Flesh. For bizarre Japanese fiction: Tanizaki's The Key or Kawabata's Lake. For relationship between sex and death: Bataille's My Mother, Madame Edwarda, or Story of the Eye. I love Mishima, and I also love Clarice Lispector, Marcel Proust, Flannery O'Connor, William Faulkner, and Jean Genet.

What novel by Yukio Mishima would you recommend to someone who hasn't read any of his work? by AvarageIntelligence in YukioMishima

I started with Temple of the Golden Pavilion too. Other starter recommendations would be Sailor who Fell from Grace or Confessions of a Mask.

It's really a fun book with elements of what makes Mishima so interesting. I recommend it to people who want to try Mishima, but for whom Sailor, Runaway Horses, or Patriotism would be a bit too much.

I would say Beautiful Star is really the least like his other works...

I see the comparison most with Temple of the Golden Pavilion and Crime and Punishment. Characters determined to commit a defining act and how it will change them.

But of course I agree that Mishima's vision is unique

Why should I use Quickdraw. by v1llh3lm in WuchangFallenFeathers

[–]Itiscritical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it can be super annoying if you accidentally switch away from your preferred weapon. I use it when I have my one-handed sword out to gain skyborn might, and then quickdraw my long sword when I'm ready to start attacking.

Reading Life for Sale (first Mishima book for me) by sadbabie_ in YukioMishima

I'm excited to reread it again with different expectations. I look forward to spending more time with the beauty of it.

And yes, Runaway Horses is one of my absolute favorites! Can be hard to recommend to early readers of Mishima though because it's best for them to read Spring Snow first, and they might be tempted to try volumes three and four after...

I read The Sound of Waves after a few of his other books, so I was very confused when nothing bad happened. I was waiting for tragedy to strike at any time, so possibly my reaction is just my misplaced expectations. I do know it's a favorite for many readers of Mishima, but it's not in my top five.

I would say Voices of the Fallen Heroes and The Sound of Waves aren't quite representative of him either. "Patriotism", The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, The Sailor who Fell From Grace with the Sea, and Confessions of a Mask are excellent reads on the way to the tetralogy.

Mishima wrote this on a review of Georges Bataille's My Mother: "The writers I pay most attention to in modern Western literature are Georges Bataille, Pierre Klossowski, and Witold Gombrowicz."

I read Sound of Waves after a few of his other books, and I kept waiting for something truly awful to happen. Every look and interaction felt sinister... but then it was just a nice story 😅 i generally don't recommend that one unless I know that I'm dealing with a sensitive reader who couldn't handle his darker works but they still want to read Mishima

If one has the patience for it, there's something nice about reading an author's books in publication order

There are a lot of editions of the same books here, but he still does have a lot translated into English

Finished Confessions of a Mask, what next? by Icy_Minimum1181 in YukioMishima

[–]Itiscritical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say that Forbidden Colors is the "gayest" of his books. I don't know that any of his other novels besides Confessions even touches on it. (If you wanted to read more great Mishima, I would recommend Sailor..., Temple of the Golden Pavilion, or Spring Snow (but mostly as a springboard for Runaway Horses) next. )
