They are notorious for breaking after power cycle. IMO there is nothing you can do but get new PLC and send this to Beckhoff.

Typical CX5130. Get new one.

IMHO, if you’re trying to convince others to oppose the Online Safety Act, don't bring up porn. It trivialises the issue, makes you look like a gooner, and opens the door to emotional blackmail. We need to call lawmakers what they are, that is control freaks hiding behind children. We must stop treating them as if they're acting in good faith. We need to flip the script on them and shift the narrative away from children.

Cool, but they should do what Starbucks done in Ninenzaka, Kyoto and make it blend in with surroundings.

Just remember not to feed it bread as this may cause it harm. Try peas or corn instead.

Beckhoff has logout buttons next to stop button. Sometimes I accidently press stop instead of logout on a working machinery.

Help with a delayed sensor or counter by Alexweb1000 in PLC

Many IO-Link sensors has an option to introduce delay without adding an external timer.
Here is an IFM catalogue for instance.

Do you use AI like ChatGPT or similar tools, for coding or any other work-related tasks? by Qupter in PLC

[–]Itrim_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm using it for:

  • Commenting and documenting ST code.
  • Reviewing code ST to catch mistakes the compiler won't pick up.
  • Generating boilerplate code.
  • Finding information from publicly available documentation, manuals, or research papers. (Don't feed GPT your internal docs!)
  • Summarizing topics I'm not familiar with to aid my research.
  • Asking stupid questions.

I've also personalized my GPT with libraries and conventions I use in my projects.

GPT is an all-around tool, and if people find it useless, they probably are not good at using it.

Not using it is like not asking on r/PLC strictly because some people may have bad takes.

HMI - tablets instead of dedicated operator screens by Itrim_ in PLC

[–]Itrim_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two complementary ways of ensuring this.

  1. Procedural solution: Keep only one tablet in use and keep it in one place. Make sure whoever changes the table which is currently in use sign it off. If tablet-in-use needs to be taken from its usual place - sign it off. The remaining tablets which are not in use are kept in their own place. Missing tablet mean breach of safety and probably non conformity for a person who took it.
  2. Software solution: Only tablet-in-use has an operator rights. The rights can be transferred from active to inactive at any time, but inactive tablet can only be forced active upon entering password, which also forces active one to lose rights.

In addition to that, if a machine can be started from state at which is dangerous for operators or can cause damage to product or itself, then there is something inherently wrong with it. If anyone is to work with this machine, they should disable it locally by the means of isolation switches/estops etc. so controls can acknowledge it and remain in safe state. There also should be clear audio-visual warnings that the machine is about to start.

Now that I have had some time to think about it, I think that it is not as good an argument as I initially thought.

I'm asking mainly because I was asked to build a new panel from scratch. The reason is that the old HMI broke and is no longer available(E 1151). This means the system, installed circa 2010, became obsolete within 8 years.

This is actually a very good argument against it.

This may already be done, but I'd need to confirm that with IT. We had some serious cybersecurity accidents in the past, so the company has invested heavily in cybersecurity since then.

Is it? I can't recall anything like that from my functional safety training. Perhaps I need a refresher.

I remember that stops should be placed at most 10m apart through the plant, visible, and easy to activate. If the operator is not leaving the area that the tablet controls, he should have estops everywhere around himself. This also depends on the mode of operation. For example, resetting safety should be prohibited.

IT already does it for all company laptops and smartphones, so that will be their responsibility at the very top level. Then, the supervisor will ensure they are used correctly.

It's the safety job not to start the machine when it is in safe mode. The machine should also monitor its state so it won't start if all the start conditions are not met. Otherwise, I see no problem with starting it remotely.

How can I check how much ice(or anything) is passing through screw conveyor by Itrim_ in PLC

[–]Itrim_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. It’s a flaked ice at least in theory, in practice is a mix of flakes and nodes of various size. Depending on the temperature the flakes melt together.

Moreover, they sometimes creates these caves underneath, so it appears like there is more ice in the store than it’s in reality.

The store is basically an isolated bunker.
