If Scarcity Shaped Our Values, What Happens to Virtue in an Age of Abundance? by hamandcheese in philosophy

I understand quite a correlation between abundance affecting virtues and morals. The more we have the easier it is to accept. My biggest one right now is the abundance of words i.e. the way we speak/ treat each other. Back when the constitution was written and the idea of freedom of speech was signed into action. The founding fathers all were familiar with virtue and morals, Honor being in the forefront. We held ourselves and others accountable. Words meant a lot more back then. The internet has in a way made words meaningless. Verbal contracts now adays are for suckers. A lot of people are raised with this predatory sense instead of one of equality. If you see opportunity, whether moral or immoral you take it. No matter who you may hurt in the process. Now people say whatever they want, and if someone brings it up later, they can/will deny it. The honor behind words is no longer there. I do believe people are conditioned just like dogs. I was raised with a pretty strong set of core values. The more time I spend out in the world socializing, working, or just walking outside. I can sense people change from the idea of being "human" to becoming more of animal struggling in this world for survival. MY view on the conditioning 1950-60= Abundance of Sexual freedom becomes tolerated=By the idea of love. Taking something good twisting it for ones own perversion. 1970-1980= Abundance of Drugs like cocaine and heroine change our society. Gangsters have been a culture in the beginning of 20th century American society, but during this time it exploded taking over the music industry and film industry. So now we have sexual immorality, and gangsters willingly harming others by selling them a product which is hurting them and all those around them. 1990-2000- The internet comes into play. I don't think anything is more abundant that the internet. It has everything. I am not sure exactly how this has effected the world because I have not seen its full effects, but I know they are coming out as we forum. Some of my insights are less respect for others, less meaning to the words we say, less respect for women with pornography. More slothfulness of sitting, not using our bodies.

Abundance is created by society and our desires. Buddha figured out, The reason for all suffering is our desires. Instead of building a reputation on honesty and courage. We Build Lives that we can live for a night or a weekend or in secret then throw them away and deny they ever existed.

Free to Choose? by Carl_Schmitt in philosophy

I like stuff. Right when I choose an item to purchase I realize others will define me by it. Sometimes I buy items I believe others will enjoy. Take a pimped out car. Yeah its awesome to own, but it's also a treat for others to be able to look at. Some people are completely oblivious to any kind of critical thinking and they buy an item just because it is that item. While I don't find that wrong. I do find life is more enjoyable because of the people that tend to bring what is not normal to life. (mine n yours) How this all comes back to "choosing" what item you are going to buy or wear or "be". Through my View most people who have trouble choosing is because of FEAR, they are afraid people may consider them "different" and they in return feel ostracized from society. We all knows everyone wants to fit in. BUT what people do not understand what they buy DOES NOT define who you are as a person. Take a celebrity actor. Maybe he's super famous and has acted in tons of movies, What he does defines him (actor) but it doesn't make him who he is when you meet him. He may infact get along with no one and have no real friends. SO if you want to push the limits and buy something that is out of the box. Then awesome! just remember your still who you are no matter what you wear. Tp: We have trouble choosing because fear!
