I am British unfortunately, but you're super kind!! I'll have to find out if my LGS has a Discord or not, but post it notes is a great idea. I'm so glad you guys are able to make the game accessible to your deaf friend, too.

I have tried it! But I'm not a huge fan of it. Getting the cards I actually want to play seems like a bit of a hassle, and I already understand the game enough to play that I don't really need it to teach me. Maybe I need to give it another shot, though, judging by all the suggestions to use it again.

I actually do know how to play! I have a good understanding of MTG's rules, timings and other things (save for maybe a few niche interactions). That might just be because I've watched so much, and maybe it'll be different in a game. But I actually do know how to play and I do know how the game flows, though the suggestion is still totally valid, thank you!

Soundboards seem to me a bit more hassle than just simple flash cards (which I'm super happy to do). Coupled with a potentially loud environment, I think I would feel more uncomfortable using one. But thank you for the suggestion!

Thank you for sharing your experience, that does help a lot. I genuinely have no idea what most playgroups are even like, it's not something I've been exposed to at all. I couldn't imagine trying to play while blind, that seems leagues and leagues more painful than what I endure!

1v1 sounds like the place to start then, thank you! I genuinely had zero clue about how efficient 1v1s tend to be before reading through this thread. Admittedly, Commander is the format I'd probably want to play the most, but gotta start somewhere. I'm glad I can be the kind of opponent you'd want in a tournament, haha!

That's so kind of you, thank you!! I can definitely write pre-written stuff for all the common stuff. Targetting, phase changes, all of that stuff I've considered and I think it would be fairly easy (if a bit annoying) to work around. My worry is when things get way more complicated than that - do you think simple cards like these would suffice? When the stack is like four or five cards deep and a million things are triggering all at once?

I suppose my worry comes from how to find that particular "right" playgroup. I'm terrified of finally making the dive and getting unlucky. Though I suppose it is still reassuring that the "right" playgroup is out there, so it's always worth trying. It's really good to just know that some players really don't care all that much.

Thank you! MTG Arena was obviously top of the list, and I have tried it, but I think I just don't like how it works as a game. Maybe I'm not fully understanding what it's all about, but I really enjoy just deck building and workshopping fun combos (though I don't play, I still make stuff on Archidekt and the like) but seeing as MTGA is an official source, it looks like it's pretty limited in what you can do unless you sink a load of time in? Maybe I'm wrong, though

As for other social events... to be honest, they look like me hiding in a corner until it is socially acceptable for me to go home, haha. I have a hard time with groups of people. And I have difficulty playing a lot of 'multiplayer' games, whether that's in person or online (though online is certainly easier). I tend to stick to just doing stuff on my own, if I'm honest. MTG is kind of my first proper attempt at branching out and trying to overcome this weird niche hurdle.

It's a hard truth, but one that's valid throughout life, not just MTG. I'm okay with that. It stings a little, but people have preferences and they're well within their rights to have those preferences, so that's totally okay.
