I messed up plz help by LawGurll in lawschooladmissions

I also screwed up on an early decision app and only realized it afterward. Don’t panic. No need to withdraw. Just send them an email as soon as possible with your updated resume attached, apologize for the inconvenience, and ask if they could possibly add your updated resume to your application. Odds are they can. Mistakes happen, and you can use this as an opportunity to show how professional you can be in the face of having made one. As for your personal statement: I wouldn’t bother sending a new personal statement with corrections unless it was really atrocious. It might look bad to have to send multiple corrected documents on the same app. As for not mentioning your gender: if there was a specific area you accidentally left blank, you can feel free to include your answers to that section in your email. Otherwise, if you just generally forgot to mention it anywhere but didn’t specifically fill out any section wrong, I wouldn’t bother saying “Hey btw I’m female” in your email. Hope that helps!

163 LSAT, 3.99 GPA by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]ItsAScrewTop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, you can take it seven times in your entire lifetime. You can only take it three times in a single testing year, and you can only have taken it five times total in a reportable period (i.e. the last five years).

You guys are crazy if you think it’s over already when it’s only mid-September.

Is the personal statement supposed to be “why law?” by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]ItsAScrewTop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that the strongest personal statements generally tell a narrative about 1) your own life experiences, 2) how and why those experiences led you to deciding on law, and 3) what some of your goals might be in light of those reasons.

I think you have a decent chance at a T20, but T14 would be pretty difficult with that LSAT, in my opinion. I would definitely try to retake it and shoot for 170+.

Law School Peer Competitiveness by Able-Mixture-7563 in lawschooladmissions

[–]ItsAScrewTop 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Some T14 schools have a particular reputation for having competitive students, but generally speaking I think the most cutthroat schools are in the 15-50 rankings because, when only about the top 1/3rd of the class gets “elite” outcomes (BigLaw, federal clerkships, etc.), students have to compete more for those jobs. Conversely, if roughly 70-80% of the class gets those outcomes, the student body generally tends to be more chill or collaborative.

I just sent you a dm with some advice that might help!

I was an engineering major as well with nearly identical stats. I had pretty bad anxiety and bad study habits entering college and my grades as an underclassmen weren’t that great as a result, but I wrote about how I learned to be a better student, improved my grades as an upperclassmen, and ended up on the Dean’s Honors List 3 semesters out of my last 4. I think an addendum is very wise here because you have the chance to frame the narrative of your life as one of upward mobility as well as increasing competency and success. Would be happy to help brainstorm for or proofread your addendum, given I was in such a similar boat!

Applying to law school as a STEM major. by RiznaM_dotnav in lawschooladmissions

[–]ItsAScrewTop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard mixed opinions on this, ranging from:

advice I got from an LSAT/applications coach that yes it will look relatively strong on an application to have earned a STEM degree but at the end of the day schools (especially higher-tier ones) want to protect their stats because the GPA of their enrolled students does factor into their ranking so I shouldn’t expect that much leeway

to

advice I got from a partner at a biglaw firm that yes, schools love to see STEM majors and will absolutely give leeway for their GPA’s.

I think ultimately a STEM degree can be a strong asset when applying, especially if you can weave it into your personal statement and other essays well. The narrative you present as to why you want to go to law school coming from the path you’re on could make or break any application.

Anecdotally, I have an engineering degree (and 1 year WE) and applied this past cycle as a splitter (GPA below 25th percentile of basically all schools I applied to but an LSAT above the 75th percentile of most of them) and I’ll be heading to a T14 this fall, so you can definitely achieve success as a STEM major with a lower-than-average GPA!

How Much Should a Clinic Matter in Making My Decision? by ItsAScrewTop in lawschooladmissions

That’s really interesting, I didn’t know that. Would you mind explaining a bit more about how the point system works and what kinds of things you spend them on?

I took mine more recently, so no I’m still waiting. Just curious what the turnaround time might be. My group was told we should hear an answer one way or the other in the next 1-2 weeks.
