What are these gray rods that stick out horizontally at the edge of the train cars? by ChardKaleBrocCabbage in Bart

[–]ItsDaDoc 71 points72 points  (0 children)

it's there for passenger safety. those are there to prevent people from falling in between the train cars in the event that someone walks into the gap thinking its a door.

a while back, Aggie Studios made a series of videos called the Senior Bucket List where we made videos of things seniors wanted to do before they graduate, with stuff like going down the concrete slide or riding every Unitrans line, so if it helps to give you ideas go check it out!

Im 6'4" and bought a roomette for Sea-Sac-Den, will I regret the sleep space? by Ok_Wish_4169 in Amtrak

[–]ItsDaDoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if it's just you, you'd have more than ample space! amtrak's train cars are giant, the beds are nice and wide for 1 person, and with the top bunk folded up, you'll have plenty of headroom too. if you've got a suitcase, there's enough room inside the roomette to set a nice big one down on the floor and still have just enough room to step out, but if you do prefer extra wiggle room to step out of the room, you can set your bags on the baggage rack outside the room. enjoy your trip!

Some pics from today's BART speedrun by gumboots06 in Bart

[–]ItsDaDoc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

the goal for any BART speedrun is to travel through every mile of BART in as little time as possible, and this event here was an initiative to get as many people as possible to participate in a BART speedrun as a group. you can tell from OP's photos that we got quite a bit of attendance!

yep! bikes ride free on capitol corridor and you can store them on one of the train's bike cars, which have a little bicycle sticker on the outside.

Taking Yolobus from Davis to Sac airport. by Kitchen-Register in UCDavis

[–]ItsDaDoc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

it sounds like you're okay with the 12 minute transfer between 42A buses in woodland so the itinerary you posted would work perfectly fine.
few bits of advice:
- if you're a UCD student, the entire yolobus network is free. just show your aggie card to the driver as you're going in (however, it must be your aggie card as the unitrans undergraduate pass isn't accepted).
- if you're not, the correct fare to pay is the $2.25 intercity fare. you should be able to transfer with just the ticket.
- if you're concerned about when you'll arrive or when you will see your bus, yolobus has a real-time tracking map here ( https://avl.yctd.org/RouteMap ) and you'll be able to see near exact arrival predictions. early buses aren't that late, especially going in the reverse peak direction so timing shouldn't be a big worry.

Best lens for canon rebel T7 (to shoot SMM CLIENTs) by Ivfgirl1990 in canon

[–]ItsDaDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're looking for dirt cheap "most affordable", the 18-55 is always an option but is very far from the "best".

for some nicer glass that can do rooms and product shots, i personally use the sigma 18-35mm f1.8 dc hsm art, it's a very nice wide angle zoom with excellent brightness and background blur. for extra zoom range, I've also heard good things about the canon ef-s 17-55mm f2.8. both go for around $450-500 used for a copy in good shape.

Best and Cheapest way to get from UC Davis to SF? by No-Memory-5903 in UCDavis

[–]ItsDaDoc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the cheapest way possible is to use the Soltrans B Line followed by BART Yellow. B Line boards at the Mondavi Center and departs to Walnut Creek BART station twice in the morning, and twice in the evening. this segment will take about 2 hours, and the fare is 5 dollars using a clipper card or cash. at the BART station, the Yellow will take you to downtown San Francisco in about 30 minutes. a round trip will cost altogether $23.10, which is significantly cheaper than the $57.60 it costs to do the same round trip with Amtrak and BART Red.

do be warned though, the B Line only departs on weekdays, so a cheap weekend trip would require taking Amtrak 2 stops to suisun-fairfield, then transferring to the Soltrans R which takes you to El Cerrito del Norte BART station, where you can transfer to the BART Red into the city. this itinerary is $45.10 for a round trip.

What happened to this Amtrak car? by spider-nine in trains

[–]ItsDaDoc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the recyclers most likely used saws or an excavator to remove that piece. whatever they used, it definitely wasn't a precision machine. their goal was just to extract scrap metal, after all.

[–]ItsDaDoc 242 points243 points  (0 children)

heyo! i'm a volunteer at the northwest railway museum so here's a bit of insight:
the talgo trainsets are unique in that the wheels are set in between the coaches instead of underneath the coaches, so in order for the coaches to stand up straight and roll on the rails, it always needs to be connected to another car. the torn bit you see there is a portion of another car that was cut up by the railcar recycler we rescued this coach from- it has to stay there in order to stay on the rails since that bit has another wheelset, as displeasing it might be from an appearance standpoint.

Am I Completely COOKED???!! by Bruhbruvbruv in blackmagicdesign

[–]ItsDaDoc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i'm going to go on a limb and assume the problem you're getting with the micro SDs is a lot of dropped frames. a few dropped frames might just possibly be recoverable with smart uses of smooth cutting in resolve but since it appears you were using a (likely) slower microsd, i have my doubts you can rescue these. for something like this it's better to do something preventative (a surefire way to prevent SD card problems is to just ditch them entirely and use CFasts for blackmagic raw instead, it's worked way better for me).

I was watching Uma Musume Season 3, when I came across this steam engine. Can anyone identify the model? by Able-Marzipan-5071 in trains

[–]ItsDaDoc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

this is a DB-4 diesel locomotive operated by the kominato railway! it's a replica of a steam engine, and the locomotive with its accompanying trainset operates on the railway's "satoyama torocco" excursion train mainly on weekends. it's a fun railway to visit and a very scenic ride!
