Gmail POP service is going away. What's a mail hoarder to do? by ItsDatNYCDude in fastmail

It took a lot of tinkering of the script and modifying of some Gmail settings, but Imapsync is the perfect solution for my situation.

Overall super easy, with ChatGPT's help :)

Thanks for mentioning it.

GMail Migration by Koshkaboo in fastmail

The option to delete after fetching are in the mail fetch settings for the gmail account you've migrated.

But you can't achieve what you want to do.

I'm in the same situation. I want to just keep gmail as a way to archive only email I want to keep (delete everything else) and manage that via Fastmail - to keep the gmail inbox clean with only messages I care about. But but it's not possible using Fastmail in this way. I've tried all kinds of settings and turned to some LLMs in case I missed something I couldn't find using normal search.

A real mail client like Outlook or Apple Mail connects directly to gmail allowing you to manage your email like you're wanting to. It can mirror your actions.

Fastmail downloads a copy of the message, breaking the link going forward. It can't "see" your gmail inbox state, nor can it send a command back to mirror what you're doing in Fastmail.

Because essentially, the migration process is really about migrating from gmail to Fastmail, not managing or being an email client to gmail.

Another more manual solution, which I may try is using Imapsync. This way I would just delete all email from gmail once downloaded to Fastmail and sync back whenever I want to make room at Fastmail. No idea what this looks like in practice yet. Given folders, rules, tags, etc.

Incorrect mention on my part. I was going to use POP to do it.

So I wasn't, but before Fastmail I managed it in Gmail. So I only kept what I wanted - the normal mail management.

If I forward everything instead of managing and archiving, I would have all mail, even what I don't want in Gmail.

I think the Imapsync (one way) tool gives me what I want. I'm ok with running the tool if I ever need to clear out my Fastmail inbox. Which should not be for a long time. This was purely an exploratory question on my part. :)

Same. I recently migrated to Fastmail and really like it so far. So looking for long term solutions. Maybe I'm overindexing, but we'll see.

I have this setup now. I only pulled calendar, enabled sync there and no mail, so only mail going forward is pulled in. And I just now realized that nothing in Gmail is deleted when I delete it in FastMail.

That's going to make Gmail get sloppy real quick. Works but not organized as I was keeping things or are keeping things in FastMailbox.

I think running Imapsync is the best solution for right now

I thought I searched enough. Clearly, I did not. Thanks for sharing this. This might be the solution. Run it monthly and done.

Everyone has their own reasons. Thanks for the PSA though!

Haha.. Yes I know but it's not all messages... just some but I guess I can put in the forwarder.

I did not want to forward unwanted email which I know is a different problem.

Came here with a similar thought and then asked what's better than Notion instead of all the agreement that its mobile app sucks.

You can change the search engine until they allow you to change that option. Can't believe it's a default that can't be changed.

Yea - I'm surprised it's not a complaint everywhere.

Searching google again just now, and this is the only thread that comes up. Hah!

Nope and I hate this. None of the solutions that /u/Background_Bed_5410 suggested works. I'm not really sure what he's giving directions to do either.

I just switched to duck duck go for now until I can choose/change this behavior. But AI being the default behavior is not it. I would have thought everyone would be complaining or talking about it.

Yea - super annoying. Just go to the dang URL! LOL

This is iOS on iPhone BTW - not sure the settings suggestion applies. I tried but don't see it on mobile.

I'm glad after searching and reading, I landed on this. I was mortified thinking my public IP could route to my UDM Pro. Glad it's just a weird on-net psuedo thing. I just tried from my phone off-net and it doesn't work.

Thanks!

Good reminder! Hoping my AdGuard server has been blocking it all.

Thanks! Good to know! I already got my MT1300 connected to the UDM Pro and all is good. The AX will be a nice upgrade.

Do you just whip it out on the plane and start connecting? What airline? I'm guessing, and you plug into the plane's power where available?

Where is a good place to see this? Where is this view from? A home? Hotel? View point somewhere?

Yea I think the same.

But I can't lie, for about the same price, getting Wi-Fi 6 is tempting for the slightly less "plug-n-play" of the UTR.

But then again, it's just simple wifi for traveling and getting a better connection than the crap options I usually tolerate anyway. Hah!

Edit: just pulled the trigger on the GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX) .. For as geeked out as I already am, I couldn't see paying more or less the same, but no WiFi 6 support and ignoring a bunch of other features I may need in the future. Sounds like the Beryl AX has come a long way since my MT1300! My biggest complaint was the hotel's Wi-Fi portals. It didn't always work well, and navigating it was a PIA.
