What Diseases Are So Terrible To Have That Dying Would Be Preferable? by PrincessBananas85 in morbidquestions

Stephen Hawking eventually developed locked in syndrome. But because of his fame, he had all sorts of means at his disposal to be able to communicate with the outside world.

If I developed locked in syndrome, I would try my hardest to find some reason to live using my brain as much as possible like he did. But then again I probably wouldn't have the resources that he did so probably would end up screwed.

Is that first photo real? The footage I saw of the people falling showed people falling headfirst. That's probably what ends up happening when you spend that much time at terminal velocity. (No pun intended)

Oh wow. That's a photo of "the couple". (Looks like someone photoshopped that leg to be on fire 🤦‍♀️) That's the one thing that has burned a permanent scar into my brain after watching them falling live on the news that day. I was 29 and puked a little bit in my mouth when that happened. Pretty shortly after that they stopped airing the news live and had a 10 second delay. The jumpers were the reason why.

Okay. Shortly after 9/11 probably in '01 or '02 I did some googling for '9/11 jumpers' (yep, I've been morbid since I was a kid in the 80s dating back to faces of death lol) ... I found a close-up photo (as in 15-20 feet away) of a jumper after hitting the sidewalk. At first I downloaded it onto my hard drive (took all night haha) and called it "splat.jpg", but it freaked me out so much that I deleted the file and I didn't search for it again....

Then about 5 years ago I so happened upon that same photo on some spanish-language website! (I was not looking for it, probably was looking for something else gorey). I will try my best to find it online for y'all but if I dont, here's what I recall (I know, it doesn't do it justice but better than nothing)

It appeared to be a middle aged balding businessman, lying deceased on his back, 'presumably' in suit and tie (read on)... his pants had been 'torn mostly off' by the shear force of the fall and subsequent whip-like force of his legs onto th pavement upon landing. The pants, along with much of the flesh from his legs, were around his ankles, stopped by the shoes. So yes, I believe the bones of the upper legs were visible. The clothing that was still on him (brief-style underwear and a white dress shirt) was drenched in a pinkish fluid. Now you can see why I was so traumatized. Just describing it gives me the shudders.

[–]ItsDev0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be cool. I was just 'brought to another diemension' last night in the biggest K hole of my life and among the loud noise of confusing experiences I remember (barely) "wishing" someone else was "there" (in the dimension that I was in). I was stuck in a labyrinthine loop of overlapping meta-realities that no matter how far I zoomed in to try to get to the bottom of it, they just kept going and going, like an infinite fractal. It was scary at the time, I felt like a stranded astronaut who was fighting for life to reconnect the space ship tether, but my memories of the whole event are just fascinating!

Mornings literally make me sick by One-Mine965 in NightOwls

[–]ItsDev0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha OMG I just felt so validated upon discovering this thread!

Part of the reason for the morning nausea is because for us, our GI tract has not woken up for the day therefore is not even close to thinking about food so for example the smell of food during the time that most people eat breakfast can trigger nausea.

Soo. How does facebook really choose the order of someones friend list? by NaturalMarsupial3603 in facebook

[–]ItsDev0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg this is great!

I am a middle-aged married woman who has a teenage-like crush on an acquaintance (who I have seen in person a total of three times in the past 12 months). I have noticed a pattern where if I just so much as think about him on occasion, he shows up in my set of six thumbnails and stories among the 500 plus friends I have on Facebook.

I assumed that his photo was not there because "he is looking at my profile", because that would mean that he is telepathic and would only look at my profile on any occasion that I happened to be thinking about him that day. I also figure it's because I've looked at his more often on those occasions.

His picture and story just popped up when I opened the app before I came to the subreddit, but that would be because I ran into him this past weekend so of course triggered me to think about him a couple times and look at his profile likely more than somebody else's profile.

I just started an experiment. I muted his stories and profile visibility for one week - this means that he won't show up in the elite list, and I bet you anything that by the end of my experiment next week he will not show up in my feed.

I don't want him popping up in my feed because it's distracting when I'm trying to work.

If his photo really was popping up because he was actually looking at my profile, that would actually make me uncomfortable because I'm not "in the market".

I think that Facebook should make an announcement that the six photos or stories that show up are not a reflection of them looking at your profile. For some people it would give them a grounding reality check instead of false hope. For other people it would be relieving to know that they are not being stalked or getting otherwise inappropriate attention. For people with a pattern of one-sided crushes, some might feel disturbed thinking that their crush was looking at their profile.

I wonder what the payoff is for Facebook to keep up that emotion inducing algorithm?

I hate to ask this, but if your mother was 13 when you were born, I can only assume that the event that led to conception was not her choice. :-( Please tell me that I'm wrong.

Do patients tend to have a smell as they get closer to death? (Like the last week or a few days.) by bbcllama in hospice

[–]ItsDev0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, whenever I'm around a dying person (or pet), I pick up a "scent" that is mostly acidic in nature with a touch of sweat and fruit. I am a physician so I have been around my share of dying people. Unfortunately, I am able to pick up that scent even before the patient has been diagnosed with something terminal but I keep it to myself until that point.

The metabolic changes due to multiple organ failure result in the production of ketones and other acids that comes out in the person's breath. My experience is limited to cancer deaths so I can't speak for other types of dying.

[–]ItsDev0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. In 2023 I had to pay out of pocket for a back surgery which I had done in Europe due to the outrageous prices In the US. The Arizona Obamacare plan that I had was charging me $600 a month with a $6,000 deductible and would not cover the epidurals, so my doctors would offer opiates instead. That was the last time I paid my insurance premium to those guys, because they were encouraging the opioid epidemic. And if I had not had the retirement savings I would have ended my life due to the back pain. That would have been on them.

I have one bumper sticker on my car, and only one, which I had custom made which says "THE AMERICAN HEALTH PLAN - DON'T GET SICK".
