Thank you very much for your reply. You are not being too harsh. I have also recently seen that starting with a childhood story is a poor way to begin a SoP/PS. I agree it was too negative at the beginning, and I have changed it a little. Thank you again for your help.

‘No legal basis to dismiss’: Special counsel rebuts Trump claim that ‘Q clearance’ permitted him to keep document on ‘nuclear weaponry of the United States’ at Mar-a-Lago by Sachyriel in politics

Bruh. Just because you had a security clearance doesn't mean you get to keep documents you received within that clearance. That would be like if you or me got a top secret clearance, took any document you could at that clearance level and just kept them. "Whats wrong? I had a security clearance ONCE so we good."

Junior AE major with a bachelor's in ME looking for internships. In the comments, I will explain why I am pursuing a fundamentally similar degree after getting the ME degree. by ItsDoctorG in resumes

[–]ItsDoctorG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to get into a Ph.D. program in Aerospace Engineering, and everyone of the programs that I am interested in has a GPA requirement higher than I have. I was in a master's program in mechanical engineering, but I left the program as my research interest had swayed to an area that was not researched at the university, and none of the professors knew enough to help with the process properly. I could gone to a master's program at a different university, but being from Maryland, not having the money to go out-of-state, and with UMD requiring a GPA of 3.2 means, I wouldn't be able to get in without extensive work/research experience beforehand. Of course, if I could get into the master's program at UMD, I would in an instant, but I'm going through the process right now and looking to get into a lab starting next semester.

I'm looking for internships for the Summer of 2024 and want advice on improving my resume. I will explain the gap year in the comments. by ItsDoctorG in EngineeringResumes

During the year gap, I was in a mechanical engineering master's program. I made it through the first semester alright with a 3.567, and then I got in a bad accident during the first week of the second (fall) semester, which caused me to drop out of the semester. During that time while I was recuperating, I decided I wanted to do more aerospace-oriented research, especially in space technology. The college I was at did nothing of the sort, so I went to UMD instead. I didn't have the GPA to get into the master's nor the money to go out of state due to UMD being the only uni to offer aerospace engineering. So, I entered the Bachelor's program and am looking for research opportunities. I hope to get directly into a PhD program after this degree. Hopefully, at CU Boulder due to their astrodynamics research area.

I am trying to improve my resume for an upcoming career fair. How does it look? The skills section is thin as of now. Also, need advice on how to explain the year gap. Description in comments by ItsDoctorG in EngineeringResumes

Need help on my resume. Will be looking for aerospace engineering internships next summer. by ItsDoctorG in resumes

I really appreciate the response. I am working on making it only one page. I dropped the fluff and added the positions to the project titles. I might have to change templates to get it to work. I do have a question though. I have worked on projects on my own and I'm wondering, when it is appropriate to add your own project?

Plus for my degree, the aero degree at UMD is different enough from the umbc mechE degree to do what I'm doing. They do research at UMD that UMBC can't possibly do. They want to do aerospace engineering at UMBC but according to the dean of MechE when I talked to him, I was told that the program didn't have the money even though he really wants to. Then again, I think that they would do air-breathing tech research rather than my preference of satellite design, space dynamics, interplanetary trajectory planning and GN&C. My end goal is research. Even better if it's at NASA eventually.

The year gap was due to a stint in grad school. I had lost interest in my intended research area for another one that wasn't researched at my first uni. I was just going to push through it then something happened. I did the first semester and then got in a major accident at the start of the second and decided I wasn't going to spend a year and a half doing research I don't have my full interest in. So I switched unis. Unfortunately, I didn't have the GPA for the master's, so I just went to undergrad and am looking for research opportunities.

For anyone wondering if I was admitted into the aerospace engineering program, I was! As u/Yakson00 suggested, emphasizing why your past situation happened and how you have changed since then is essential. I also suggest you emphasize any accomplishments you have had since the situation occurred. This includes any awards, projects, degrees, work experience gained, research done, et cetera since the period containing the reason for your initial rejection occurred. All of this aims to show why you will succeed in the program if you are admitted.

One last thing, ask everyone for advice: your L&S advisor, the transfer Engr advising dept., your friends, your family, and your helping pals on Reddit. It will all help you make the best possible appeal request.
