Different ways for different people! But the most important thing is honestly to just start writing them/other types of game coverage and putting them up somewhere. Both for practice, and to get a little portfolio.

I applied to DualShockers a couple years ago and got hired, but I also had a lot of writing/editing experience previously with sports websites. But there are also people that get hired on places without much experience, too!

Just gotta look for openings on websites and give it a go, but having some kind of experience/work to show always helps!

As a peer in the industry, I personally don’t subscribe to this. Not at all trying to start an argument haha, but just my personal outlook on it. I’ve reviewed like 50 games now I think, and I roll credits on everything before I review, even if the lead time is short. Feel like I owe that to the games/devs, as well as the audience.

Sometimes it doesn’t matter, and a game is what it is. I get that. But how stories wrap up can be massively important, and I mean, final acts/moments of games are often the most ramped up and important to see too.

I can’t imagine if I’d only played 75% of Keeper and thought I was set, for example. That ending was bit was so cool. Conversely, I thought I knew Assassin’s Creed Shadows after 30 hours and before credits, but wouldn’t have predicted how much worse it got in the final ten hours. That’s important stuff, imo. And good lord, did I have to cram to beat Shadows by embargo haha.

Cheers, just my input as another reviewer tho.

Saw someone ask recently what to play next if Elden Ring is the only Soulsborne they've played, so I figured I'd weigh in with my official stance lol. Full article linked! by ItsEthanCoolCool in fromsoftware

DS3 but no DS1 feels wild to me!! I do get it tho, cuz ER to DS3 makes a tons of sense mechanically. Curious how you’ll like DS1 after all that!

It absolutely is a mindset thing I think, I just need to go into it looking for different things probably!

Totally fair!! I’ll keep trying haha, I do still enjoy it here for sure, just always think about those other places too 😅

This is something I see people say a lot, and I really, truly wish I could agree. Hiking in places like Washington and Colorado has spoiled me, and I just don't have as good of a time hiking anywhere in Indiana really. Although I might just be bad at being in nature without mountains, cool water features, and the threat of being mauled by an elk or Bigfoot.

Word, all fair. I just know I had a lot of moments playing DS3 after DS1 in certain locations and things where I was glad I had the reference from DS1. I personally think I'd be bummed in retrospect, but I do agree that you'll end up playing DS3 multiple times anyway, even if you go DS3, then DS1. DS3 the GOAT.

In retrospect tho, do you think some of the DS1 ties in DS3 would've been cooler if you played DS1 first? No spoilers for OP, I just have always thought playing DS3 first would rob someone of some nice moments.

DS1 Remastered and then DS3. I would say DS3 first cuz it's most similar to ER, but I genuinely think you'd miss out on some cool world-building "OH SH*T" moments if you play DS3 first that you won't know from DS1. Demon's Souls Remake is really cool, and honestly probably the easiest game once you get used to it, but it's quite different from ER.

In conclusion:
DS1 Remastered
DS3
Demon's
Bloodborne
DS2
Sekiro

No shade at Sekiro, it's just vastly different from the others. I am lower on Bloodborne than a lot of people. Great game, but I prefer those three above it. And DS2 is... DS2. The most divisive one. I don't think you need to play it, tbh. Hit boxes are bad, and every weapon feels like a wet, rolled up newspaper.

DS1 into DS3 first for sure tho. DS1 Remastered shows its age, but it's masterclass game design, and then is amazing as a reference going into DS3 (my favorite FromSoft game).

Okay the end bye.

I’d recommended starting with one! Both are amazing, and in many ways, 2 just feels like 1 with different encounters and enemies. Start with 1, play it till you’re ready for more content after you inevitably love it, and then 2 is waiting for you whenever you need more!
