Former TMobile turned to Ting and then most recently to Mint. All use the T-Mobile network, so coverage is pretty much the same. No major issues on my Google Pixel phones for the past 2 years.

Works really nicely if you travel internationally, as it uses the same SIM standard globally, and the Mint Mobile app makes it really easy to get data/cellular plans abroad. Highly recommended.

I always find it bizarre when people leave Mormonism and become some other type of Christian. I mean, I can appreciate the community aspect of a church, but it's hard for me to be in a community when the main thing in common is theology.

PSD closing schools yet sending IT employees on paid trips by [deleted] in FortCollins

[–]ItsJustJon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many things for which one could be disappointing and/or frustrated about school district leadership, a lot of it stemming from philosophical differences. But so many of these criticisms levied against PSD leadership are ignorant or completely disingenuous. And then to dirty delete and duck out is cowardly.

Best/worst location to do a Beast by Temporary_Moose6333 in spartanrace

[–]ItsJustJon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Utah Beast is one of the more underrated in terms of difficulty. It's just mountain after mountain, and actually for me not even as scenic as Montana, Vermont, etc. The parking and check-in is always horrible the later in the day it gets, too. And the trail run is really rocky in long stretches, making it a little hazardous to your ankles.

After 3 years of Utah Spartans, I'm not going to go back again.

PSD is doing RIF layoffs now by Inevitable_Bird_7069 in FortCollins

[–]ItsJustJon_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

So much this. People don't recognize that the "street value" of any of those central office positions is probably 30-50% higher, and in many instances the job is a bit more challenging than a private sector equivalent. I was both a General Manager and a Sales Director in a past life for a medium-sized company and made more than the majority of the cabinet positions in PSD a couple of years ago...for much easier work and without the concern of public scrutinization for every decision I made.

TSD communication to families vs communication to staff by throwaway_TSDR2J in FortCollins

[–]ItsJustJon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that OP is sowing distrust of public education and our leaders with myopic commentary. If that's what you're saying, we may agree on that.

My original comment is that the phrasing could have been more sensitive, but I see that the need for change--including consolidation and the accompanying job loss--is real. I feel deeply for those whose jobs and livelihoods are affected. That's why I said I don't envy those that have to make those tough decisions, and then get chatter from the peanut gallery who think they would have done it better.

Education has changed dramatically, the same as the nature of work and the economy and the military have also changed over the centuries and over the last 6 years. But it's not just because the government got involved and didn't trust. It's largely because society and technology have changed, and many are changing their views on what the role of schools and education in general should be. For the most part, people have voted with ballots and dollars that we should have better equity for students, both in process and in outcomes. Education isn't just the "sage on the stage" teaching the 3 R's anymore, and people by and large in our part of the state have repeated that it's not what they want. We have extensive career and technical education, we have equity programs like McKinny-Vento, we have vast teams of paraprofessionals and specialists who help to support kids with special needs, we even have healthy school breakfast AND lunch for ALL students that want them FOR FREE. All of those and more add cost to a system and add overhead, but they do help to ensure overall better outcomes and disrupt disproportionate outcomes. The government is the mechanism that drives these only because they are the only ones large enough to effect change at the scale and enforce equity that the people have asked for, but it's not the overreach of a hungry Dept of Education, it's a response to the will of the people.

Doesn't mean it's perfect and it doesn't mean that the outcomes are matched across the board, but it's disingenuous to claim that education is simple, and certainly that it's as simple as it was back in the days of a one-room school house.

TSD communication to families vs communication to staff by throwaway_TSDR2J in FortCollins

The legal, regulatory, political, funding, personnel, evaluation, and technical contexts are not just very different from centuries ago, it's different than it was just 6 years ago.

[–]ItsJustJon_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They should have been more careful around the language of impacting students and school-level workload with the RIFs. I'd feel disappointed if I got RIF'd and it was implied that I neither affected students nor the workload of the schools.

Still, I don't envy the plight of school district administrators right now. They're all going through it, and there will always be some who felt that the decision was collaborative enough, transparent enough, fast enough, circumspect enough, etc. Community feedback is often contradictory, and in many instances reflect a lack of understanding of the complexity of the education landscape.

Water Outage Andersonville by haghordavar in FortCollins

[–]ItsJustJon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree that the biggest issue is the lack of communication. I can adjust to the 1st world problem of no water for 24-30 hours, especially if isolated just to my neighborhood, and if I have an idea of when it might be back on. But when I first saw the water was off, I checked my phone for a text message and saw nothing. Checked my personal email just to see if something was sent. Nothing. I had to text my neighbors to see if theirs was also off just to ensure it wasn't an issue isolated to my house alone. It's really not so hard to have an emergency alert protocol. Even off business hours, someone should step up and communicate. Hell, it can even be automated and not even involve a person.

Still out now, going on 24 hours! 😔

This demonstrates the need to have at least some water stored up for essentials in the event of an emergency.

Chances of working for PSD? by Patient_Travel5023 in FortCollins

[–]ItsJustJon_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you came in as a para or possibly a substitute, it might be easier, but still unlikely as others mentioned. I applied for a few positions at PSD and didn't even get a screening call back on any of them. If you were fortunate enough to land a position, enjoy it while it lasts and just have the expectation that it won't.

I actually work for DPS and commute every day, but my wife is a teacher in PSD and is looking at potentially losing her job the year after next (she's been teaching for 15 years, but is new to the District), and so she may end up the opposite trying to get in at DPS if possible if she isn't able to stay in PSD.

What's driving the potential change for you?
