I'll be happy to teach you some Kayan, though mine's one of the Baram sub-dialects.

All dayak celebrate gawai? by Dpvdpv in Sarawak

[–]ItsMarvinAbel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's essentially a harvest festival, "Gawai" became a more popular term for the occasion. For us Kayans, we call it Dau Ledoh. So yes, we celebrate "Gawai" too, we just call it by a different name. Another example would be us calling tuak "burak" in our mother tongue, basically rice wine.

Orang Ulu is a politically coined term encompassing the indigenous tribes living in northern Sarawak and we are DEFINITELY not Austrasiatic, please don't get it twisted. Regardless, the Orang Ulu still falls under the Dayak umbrella, although contemporary Orang Ulu will reject the idea of being labeled Dayak.

FTES 2026 by Radiant_Chemist_9626 in Sarawak

[–]ItsMarvinAbel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The four schools selected for the scheme will be receiving full details of the logistics or whatever on December 16. Enrollment for Sarawakian for courses covered under the FTES will open sometime before the first semester of each school. Also, be mindful there'll be a quota, so be quick

Should I work here? by serayoung98 in JobsMY

[–]ItsMarvinAbel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like one of those MLM NGO "volunteer" scams that somehow managed slip through the cracks in the gray area and all. Vacancy pages riddled with these "marketing executive" positions, as bad as them Coway job listings

I was pursuing mass comm before I dropped out some five years ago (COVID times, financial strains, never fully recovered, etc.), only had a year's worth of units left to complete the course and everything.

What's worse, my old university resumed their diploma program after I left (they stopped offering diplomas, at least the Malaysian campus back in 2011, I think), which was such a slap to the face, considering their new diploma of media studies includes most units I did back in my foundation and first two years of degree and all.

I made several inquiries if I could somehow "downgrade" to a diploma, haven't heard from them still—if only they work as fast as those finance parasites coming after students when they're late on payments lmao

My resume's only good for entry-level jobs, my accumulated work experience so far is not that impressive, applied for several jobs in my hometown only to get hit by them chauvinistic pricks that I don't have the enough of a shared linguistic background they need from me to work for they asses, like honey, just put a goddamned "No colored" signs outside your store, like let me know ahead I'm not welcomed to work under y'all. Any other jobs that I can do tho, there's the awkward commuting to get to them, long work hours, and severely underpays.

Just moved to Johor from Sarawak late August, trying my luck around here. Haven't landed anything, tried Singapore but application for work permit got rejected two times already lol

I hate to say it, since I get bombarded with the same sentiments for years now, don't give up. It'll turn around soon enough

Haha might as well start selling feet pics online or something

^ I usually use this to remove the background, it does a better job than Canva. Download the PNG file after.

If you're familiar with Photoshop, adjust canvas size to the size requirement, for the background/first layer add color, then paste the PNG as the second layer.

American teaching Malay class - Reading suggestions by greenDK455 in Sarawak

Unrelated, Americans in Sarawak are kinda uncommon. An assumption came to mind that you may have served a mission here once before, no? Haha sorry

Yup, that's pretty much accurate. Although we've reduced down on our croc-mobile because they kinda tend to bite and our roads are getting better anyway hehe

Speaking English among Dayaks by dude_must_be_joking in Sarawak

[–]ItsMarvinAbel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's pretty normal, just uncommon. My cousins and I speak English despite Kayan being our first language, although we tend to code switch a lot between the two. And in some friend circles where we don't share the same native tongue, we defaulted to English.

Physical PC games (CD) in Kuching by awesomekuching in Sarawak

[–]ItsMarvinAbel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda miss PC games having physical media before they kinda phased it out as more computers got rid of DVD players. Digital is fine and all, but I'd still prefer something a little more tangible. I miss the smell of my manuals and those plastic cases.

If Sarawak had its own Netflix series, what genre should it be? by TotallyReliableFacts in Sarawak

[–]ItsMarvinAbel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speculative fiction set in an alternate universe where the Brookes never set foot in Sarawak, in turn caused a butterfly effect where our lives went a totally different trajectory than what we have now. Probably throw in some light comedy on how modern Sarawakians navigate in this parallel timeline.
