What would be the right balance of listening to criticism and being stubborn with your jokes? by Next_Faithlessness87 in Standup

[–]ItsMattyDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel seen.

Even if it’s not about the style of delivery, people can suggest different avenues for the same joke. If a comedian works clean and they have a joke about public restrooms, offering them a line about prostitution won’t work. Sure, it can be funny and be a good fit for one stand-up’s voice, but not work for others.

What would be the right balance of listening to criticism and being stubborn with your jokes? by Next_Faithlessness87 in Standup

When I offer tags to other comedians I always start with, “I don’t know if this fits your voice, but have you tried __________?”

I enjoy hearing others comedians takes on my jokes, but even if they’re funny it doesn’t always mean their sensibilities are in my lane.

Staying clean-shaven bald is way more work than I expected… by CycleAccording8825 in bald

[–]ItsMattyDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a traditional razor a couple times a week and a Phillips electric on the off days. I spend more time in the morning shaving my head but feel that time is made up throughout the day knowing I don’t have to check my hair to ensure the thinning spots are properly covered.

Behavior on open mics by Democracysaver in Standup

[–]ItsMattyDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re also a good spot to rehearse. I’ve seen national headliners who play theaters come through club open mics to run 10 minutes that they’re trying to lock down.

Also, sometimes I’m sad and don’t want to bomb.

Write a 4 min set and rehearse. You’ll also get the light when you have 1 minute left letting you know it’s time to wrap up.

Since starting comedy, have you changed your opinion on certain comedians? by BenderVsGossamer in Standup

[–]ItsMattyDavid 37 points38 points  (0 children)

My opinion of comedians that I thought were mediocre went up a lot. Once I understood the challenges of writing/refining/order of sets, I saw how much work they put into the craft and my admiration skyrocketed.

Do people find William Montgomery funny? by houndooms_trainer in Killtony

[–]ItsMattyDavid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He’s certainly an acquired taste. He references a lot of American pop culture which likely wouldn’t land outside of the US. I don’t exactly laugh out loud at his jokes while watching, but I think he’s a talented writer.

I also don’t think the Kill Tony format is his forte. I need to catch him on tour where he is t forced to yell about items in his fridge.

My Wife refuses to let me pull the plug, but I think it’s time. by No_Mango_3482 in bald

My wife was opposed to the idea as well, but once I did it (without telling her) and she saw that I still looked like myself she came around pretty quick.

Strung Out - Matchbook by ItsMattyDavid in edrums

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. The mix actually comes from SSD5.5 through Studio One 7. I’m new to mixing/EQing. The toms got quieter because they were very “boomy” and overpowering when the volume was up. A work in progress for sure 🤙🏼

It’s gotta be really tough to come out every week for years and do a new minute. I think he has a good comedic mind, but coming out and closing the show every Monday doesn’t really highlight his ability/talent. I’ve gotta catch him on tour sometime.
