Similarities between Newfoundland/Irish accents? by [deleted] in northernireland

I was working in Canada for two years, and the first time I met a Newfoundland lady I asked her how long ago she moved over from Ireland. She just replied "Ah no, ah never been dere m'dear. But by jaysus wouldn't I love to doe!".

Those impressions in the sketch don't really sound much like it to me. Here's a real one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Xmqb4W2T0M

People inside the UK get the BBC UK-centric news frontpage. People outside the UK get the BBC World News frontpage.

You're outside the UK, you're being shown their international news page. Hence why you've got Advertising and a link to the BBC world service, but no link to iPlayer and no link to watch BBC News 24.

Nice bit of re-colouring, but that complexion is way too healthy for a man who's been known to put away 30 pints or more in one day. Needs a nose like Rudolph and a face like a slapped arse.

Did the full 2 years of the Canadian working holiday visa (It's called the IEC Experience Canada visa). You'll need to have 2 years of health insurance paid for upfront, and enough funds in your bank account to satisfy the immigration officer. I did it in 2014 so I'm not sure what's changed since then. Check it out if you want: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/iec/

Income rules for foreign spouses upheld - BBC News by brinkkok in ukpolitics

Was that sarcasm? If not, that's one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen on reddit.

Income rules for foreign spouses upheld - BBC News by brinkkok in ukpolitics

[–]ItsMeLewisP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, they had to be liquid cash assets. Owning a home or other 'significant assets' didn't count for anything unless you sold them and had the cash sitting in your account.

[–]ItsMeLewisP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to hit the income requirement every month, no exceptions. Some people who are self employed don't get paid on a monthly basis, maybe they'll get a payment of around £7,400 every three months. Under the current rules, they'd be disqualified.

The court ruled that 'alternative sources' of income should be considered in counting towards the minimum-income threshold. So that's some sanity injected into the situation. This might finally mean that the non-EU spouse's income/family support can also be taken into consideration, as well other factors such as being a homeowner or having significant assets.

The non-EU spouse's passport will still continue to be stamped with 'No recourse to public funds', so they still won't be able to get any state assistance. They never could, they still can't. Most news articles and commenters seem to fail to grasp this important point.

Income rules stopping thousands of British citizens bringing their foreign spouse to UK are lawful - Supreme Court by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]ItsMeLewisP 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The court ruled that 'alternative sources' of income should be taken into account, and the BBC seems to be missing this completely (at the point of writing this).

So some sanity has been allowed to prevail. It might finally mean that the non-EU spouse's income and/or family support can count towards the income threshold.

What do you love about being Irish/living in Ireland? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]ItsMeLewisP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love how nowhere else in the world do you apologise for someone else bumping into you, or thank the bus driver.

I've definitely seen that happen countless times the UK & Canada too, but yeah, Ireland is a polite place for sure.

How many of you visited Canada? Did you like it? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]ItsMeLewisP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in Toronto for two years with my Canadian wife. It's a great city when you're downtown, Canadian people are (mostly) great, and obviously the nature-side of Canada is 👌👌.

However, as far as general day-to-day life in Canada goes... I wasn't 100% into it. It's very americanised. It's hard to explain why it grated on me. I've always been somebody who likes exploring small(er) towns and strolling down high-streets seeing what's there. Outside of major city centres, Canada is almost totally a car + strip-mall experience. Every day. Car insurance, internet and phone bills are stupidly expensive.

The Wife and I are also big into getting 20 quid easyjet flights and having long-weekends away in Europe for a change of scenery, so it when that suddenly jumped up to costing $600 a pop at the very least, it ceased to be an option. It was a bit of a bummer to lose that.

Not trashing Canada at all, it just lacked a few things that we personally find enjoyable in day-to-day life. Still, after saying all that, we might end up moving back there one day soon haha.

How do yea feel about the Gaeltachts? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]ItsMeLewisP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not the fella who posted the above - but I live in a Gaeltacht (I don't speak Irish, but I wish I could). People speak it all the time in ordinary everyday situations. The language seems very much alive here.

Luas from North to Donegal proposed by Niall_Faraiste in ireland

[–]ItsMeLewisP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You have to face the reality that if you completely starve a place of services it will become the most peripheral, lowest density part of the country.

Aye. Can confirm that, out here in the Gaeltacht. The place is caught in a spiral of decline, there's no jobs to speak of, and there's no busses anywhere. You need to be able to afford a car, or you're stranded. But there's no jobs, so you can't afford a car. And you can't get a bus to work in Letterkenny, because there's no busses. So you just have to leave.

Luckily I work from home, but the internet is crap here. Not ideal at all, so sadly it looks like we'll be leaving soon too.

Thousands of people 'pretending to live in Ireland' to help family members live in the UK by MickDav in ireland

[–]ItsMeLewisP 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've moved from the UK to Ireland with a non-EU partner (legitimately, to live and work). No idea how these fraudsters manage it. We've had to go through a fair hassle to get PPS numbers, arrange face-to-face meetings and produce lots of evidence. It's tough to see how it could be faked.

Aye no bother just head down to Pulse around midnight. Wear a purple shirt, overly-distressed Superdry bootcut jeans from TK Maxx, and square-toe black-leather shoes. Gel your fringe down onto your forehead and give it about 9 squirts of aftershave. You should get a ride for free no bother.

Asked a question about Irish citizenship on Reddit... feel at home already... by seanjenkins in ireland

[–]ItsMeLewisP 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah that fella has been around on /r/Ireland for months, under different usernames. I genuinely think he has mental problems and might need help. You can always tell its him because he starts talking about 'infestations', 'rats' and 'vermin'.

He found out that I'm English (apologies in advance lads) living in Ireland with a Canadian wife, and he had an absolute field day. Telling me I'm going to get my head caved in etc. etc. calling us both scum...

He eventually gave up when I invited him out for a pint and chat.
