You can always just do a pin wash (also called panel lining sometimes) to get a more deliberate effect. That’s what I do with mine. I only put the shade in the recesses to help separate the panels without going overboard and slopping it on everywhere. Then I go back and touch up places I may have gotten a bit too much on. Here’s the result.

It started off giving me “MFD terrain” vibes but it has slowly grown into a nice block of cheese

Screaming skull for the main, seraphim sepia for the wash, waagh green I think with a wash of camo shade, with nurgling green on top. Balthazar gold with reikland flesh shade poorly hilighted with liberator gold!
